OK, after looking through some of Mr. Milone's blogs, I came across this one; it states nvidia-settings will no longer be installed with the nvidia legacy driver:

* Fixed: nvidia-settings is no longer installed for the legacy driver because of
Ubuntu's Bug #156730

Here is the bug report being referenced. It describes the problem you just encountered trying to install nvidia-settings - that nvidia-settings cannot be installed alongside the nvidia legacy driver.

As such, I do not think you will be able to install CF; however, if you feel up to testing KDE 4.0, you should be able to use its desktop effects, no problem. Most of KDE 4's bugs were fixed with the latest KDE 4.0.1 release, and I've really been enjoying it; you may also want to check out the HowTo I wrote a little while back describing how to configure the KDE 3.5.x desktop effects.

Installing the legacy driver from source might fix your problem, but I don't know if the package includes nvidia-settings or not (I've never installed from source). Let me know which direction you want to go and I'll help you configure your system.

i'll probably first try to install the legacy driver from source

if that doesnt work i might just upgrade to kde 4.0

just a quick question:
Will installing kde-4 uninstall my kde 3.5.x apps or any saved data? i've never switched my Desktop Enviornment.

i know i can check to see which programs will be unistalled with adept, but like for example, will my ~/Desktop be deleted, or will the buttons on my kicker disappear, or will KDE 4.0 just read the configuration files and keep my desktop the same
(will the config files remain?)

i guess i could have just ask the question What, if anything, will i lose from upgrading to KDE 4.0

You can run all your KDE 3.5.x (and GTK) apps from a KDE 4.0 session, and vice-versa. There are still a few things that haven't been completely ported from KDE3 to KDE4 (such as being able to configure your task panel), but those are easy to live with, and will be fixed in the very near future.

so installing KDE 4.0 shouldnt uninstall/erase anything?

so how do i configure X to start KDE 4.0 instead of 3.5.x?

You shouldn't run into any incompatibility issues (always double-check the changes that will take place, though). Once you have KDE4 installed, you can choose to run a KDE4 session by clicking the drop-down menu on the bottom-right of the login screen, and selecting KDE 4 from the "session type" list.

SWEET. alright well the reason i havent been trying anything yet is im not on my computer atm but i'll try downloading the legacy driver and then i'll try KDE 4.0, i'll post my results when i've done that

kde 4.0 was a disaster
kwin would keep crashing
fluxbox would crash everytime i clicked on a few buttons (like add widget)
so i uninstalled it.

i got kde 4.0 by

sudo apt-get install kde4-core

is there a better way to get it, or someway i can fix it so kwin/fluxbox wont crash

Have you enabled the KDE4 specific repository as described here? Also, are you running a KDE session or Fluxbox? I ask because KDE apps don't run well in the Fluxbox environment, as I understand it anyway.

yes, i enabled the repository.
and i'd run a kde4 session and kwin would crash. so i had to switch terminals and start fluxbox with

fluxbox --replace

Sorry for the delayed response; I've been hacking at my computer trying to get Visual Studio 2005 running with Wine for one of my CS courses...I've given up the Wine approach, but have found and am playing around with Mono. I've kinda' had to put other projects off for the moment, but will research some more into your problem as soon as I get mine worked out

thanks. i appreciate all the help, and as everything besides compiz and kde 4 are working, i'm not in a HUGE rush to get this done. hopefully we can get this done soon...hopefully without me having to buy a new graphics card.

OK, I'm back; I found this bug report describing a similar problem with KDE4 and Kwin. Kwin apparently crashes on the initial reporter's system when he enables KDE4's desktop effects. 2 quick questions: did you enable the desktop effects before kwin started crashing on you, and what platform are you using (32- or 64-bit)?

Try this: delete your /home/[username]/.kde4 file (a new one will be generated), reinstall kwin-kde4, and install the kdelibs5-dev, libqt4-dev, and libxcomposite-dev packages. Then, reboot (completely; don't just restart X) and try to log into a KDE4 session.

okay wait but i unistalled kde4-core.(i did that AFTER i was having problems) i need to reinstall that right?

when i instralled kde4-core it wants to install kdebase-bin-kde3. wont that mess up my kde3?
