Re: X sever constantly restarts. THIS IS RIDICULOUS!!! Xgl problem? (Kubuntu 7.1

when i instralled kde4-core it wants to install kdebase-bin-kde3. wont that mess up my kde3?
No, it's OK; it will be replaced by the KDE4 version which still works with KDE3. The kde4-core package is just a metapackage, or, a package that points to other packages that need to be installed to accomplish a particular task. Uninstalling it won't effect any of the KDE4 apps installed with it.

I couldn't figure it out so I just reinstalled the Alpha4, which seems to have worked for now :P Hopefully the release of Hardy Alpha5 and/or KDE 4.0.2 will fix whatever's causing the bug...

well....kde4 was working...but when i install my nvidia-legacy driver...it unistalls a bunch of kde4 packages...which messes up kde3 and 4....then i have to fix it....by uninstalling everything kde4 and reinstalling apps like konqueror that were uninstalled. then i reinstall the kubuntu-desktop meta package.

this brings me back to kde3.5 without my drivers. VERY frustrating. KDE4 and legacy dont like each other...and i cant get get CF to work

              It is indeed :P

Have you tried installing the Nvidia driver from source? I'm thinking Nvidia-settings is probably included in the package, but even if it isn't, installing from source to make sure wouldn't hurt your situation any. If all else fails, you absolutely have to have CF, and find your video card just isn't powerful enough to run the 3D graphics, you can pick up an Nvidia GeForce 4 or 5 series card for a very low price off eBay (that's where I get most of my PC stuff)

You may also wish to create a thread on the Compiz Community Forums.

I understand - according to your last error message with CF, CF couldn't find Nvidia-settings, so it bailed on you...  I'm suggesting installing from source in case Nvidia-settings is included with the driver package; that way, CF will find Nvidia-settings when you try to run it, and should then work

If you would like to just stick with XGL ( :P ), I can dig up one of the many HowTo's on squeezing all the performance you can from it.
