kubuntu kde 4.0 and ati

I have Kubuntu KDE 4.0 in live mode (wondwerfull but slowly) but I can´t activate Desktop effects. If I write glxinfo, my direct rendering is no.
I don´t know why because my ATI 9550 works well with other distros usin the ati opensource driver (ati) without the need to install fglrx.
May you help me?

I did have same problem with installation from live CD and Ati drivers (using now fglrx):

but Fintan tells that he has working KDE 4.0 with Ati drivers.


Afterthought:

What tells (in the konsole)?

grep "(EE)" /var/log/Xorg.0.log

and/or

grep "(WW)" /var/log/Xorg.0.log

That is, errors (EE) and warnings (WW) in the xorg log.
