7.04 livedvd pen drive install help

I have no way of getting to another pc, to download a livecd. I only have a livedvd on me, and was wondering how I would go about using the livedvd to install on my 4 gig pen drive. I have seen all the tutorials that use a livecd, have even given it a try, but i dont have the needed space.

I was wondering if anyone could point me towards a livedvd tutorial, or I've seen a few tutorials on building it some how. I've really tried to figure this out on my own, but just cant. Any help is appreciated.

    Maybe check out this HowTo.

Edit: Or, if you want a normal installation and have a large enough flash drive, you can choose to install to the flash drive from the installation GUI. I don't think you'll be able to have a full Kubuntu installation on your pen drive, but if you can somehow get hold of an Alternate CD, you can install a command line system and go from there. You should have enough space on your flash drive to use the above HowTo, though.

If you do this in GUI (in Konqueror or Dolphin), you must enable View > Show Hidden Files. (As you may know, hidden folders or files have a dot in front of their name; the only one here is .disk -- a folder.)

Don't know if this will help, but the following are exactly all the files in my Kubuntu 7.10 Live CD (that I copied onto the flash drive—you don't need them all, but this is what everybody does):

.disk (hidden folder) bin casper disctree dists install isolinux pics pool preseed programs ubuntu (link folder) autorun.inf kubuntu.ico md5sum.tex README.diskdefines start.bmp start.exe start.ini wubi-cdboot.exe

If you use GRUB (as I did in my how-to), you won't need isolinux, but it does not hurt to keep it in there (you can always remove it later; most how-to's use iso/syslinux, not GRUB).

Post back here again with questions.
I'm not sure how much I can help, as I basically just figure out some formula that seems to work (sometimes by trial and error) and go with it, not always understanding all the why's when it gets deep into weird details & what-not; but we have other folks here, too, that can jump in

Just noticed you have 7.04 Feisty, whereas I used 7.10 Gutsy.
Your 7.04 should work the same. I'm not sure the files will be the same though, but I'll bet either it is the same or just a minor difference. As you know, things got easier with Feisty in terms of Live flash drives, and results extend to Gutsy. You don't need all those DVD files to make things work.

Re: 7.04 livedvd pen drive install help

I actually got it on by installing with the text install. Now my question is how would I go to 7.10? I tried updating but don't have enough space. How do I go about slimming down? I haven't really messed around much configuration wise due to the livedvd.

I just can't seem to find a good guide, that shows you what apps you don't need. Or any other things really not needed.

Thanks for the help so far.

Re: 7.04 livedvd pen drive install help

If you only want a basic installation, install a text mode system to your pen drive, boot to it, and install the kde-core package with the command:
            Code:
            sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install kde-core
That will install only the core apps you need for a functional KDE environment. Then, you should be able to start KDM with:
            Code:
            sudo /etc/init.d/kdm start
That should just about do it

Edit: Be aware -> there's a difference between "Install in text mode" and "Install a command-line system". You want to use the "Install a command-line system" option.

Re: 7.04 livedvd pen drive install help

As you probably know from all your research, there's several things you can do with the flash drive install.
-- Install the entire OS on the flash drive (that is in the link I gave) – 2-3 GB+
-- Install a true live version on the flash drive just like having a live CD (in my link) – 700 MB
-- Install a true live version on the flash drive with persistence (in my link) -- 700 MB in root partition 1 and a separate persistent casper-rw partition.
-- and others; e.g., true live version with persistence looped to a hard drive or UFD.

Here's another thread you might wish to jump in on. Explain your DVD situation. It's for Ubuntu, but it works identically (I believe) for Kubuntu.
