bcm4306 help

    bcm4306 help

    Hi there. I cannot get wifi working on my laptop. I have a Compaq Presario R3000 (AMD version, exact model is DP533AV), As far as I know, it is running a Broadcom bcm4306 wifi chip.

    I have tried using the Restricted Drivers install using the *.sys file from Windows. I've tried using fwcutter (this is what I am currently using) as instructed here. I have tried using the KNetworkManager and wicd (what I am currently using).

    In every setup, I can see the wifi networks around me, but I cannot connect to any of them. I've setting my home wifi with a hidden and a broadcasted SSID, I've tried unsecured, WEP, and WPA. Nothing works. I can see the networks, but I cannot connect to them.

    I am fairly knew to Linux, and at this point I am completely stumped. This, and getting 3D acceleration are the two things keeping me from migrating 100% from Windows to Kubuntu, and I think I know what i need to do to fix the 3D, but I am stumped here on the wifi.

    Once again, I am trying to get a bcm4306 working. I installed it with fwcutter, and am using wicd, I can see wifi networks, but I cannot connect to them. I am running Kubuntu 7.10

    Any help would be appreciated.

    My laptop is a Toshiba Equium with a BT PCMIA card. I have followed the tutorial at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...ireless+feisty at few times with success. I have had to go down to Problem 1 - that has been the thing which has sorted me.

    P.S. Your link does not seem to work?

      I have an R3000...it's the intel version, but probably the same wireless...does the blue light come on when you boot the laptop, and are you able to turn the card on and off with the switch?

      If not, then the driver is not installed correctly, and you may have partial, or no functionality. If so, then most likely I can't help you...

      I'm not at home right now, but I know I have a website bookmarked that I used to get ndiswrapper working (ndiswrapper lets you use windows drivers for wireless cards, and that is what I used). Let me know about the blue light, and if it doesn't work right, I'll dig around to see what I did...

        I fixed the link (I mixed up the code for the display text and the url text). I'll be trying the info in your link now. I'll reply to this thread on whether it works or not.

        Under the fwcutter install, the light does turn on, and pushing the button does turn it on and off. That all seems to be working fine.

        As I am about to try ndiswrapper, I just re-installed Kubuntu, so that isn't working now (I haven't done fwcutter this time). I did this because I know that I accidentally removed the ndiswrapper core files that come with the basic install, and it seems easier to just reinstall kubuntu than to restore those files.

        I would not count on the Intel version of the r3000 having the same wireless chipset. The AMD version uses the nforce3 motherboard in order to make use of the AMD chip, and i seem to remember (though I could be wrong) that the Intel version used an Intel motherboard, and very possibly uses some Intel wireless chip. Again, this is going off of what I remember from looking at the Intel version 4 years ago when I bought this laptop, i only know the specs for the AMD version for certain (more or less).

          A couple of things:

          1) R3000, not the same thing.

          2) fwcutter will get you 11mbs from your 54mbs nic. If you want 54mbs you need to use ndiswrapper.

            and no, I know it had a broadcom wireless chipset, I just don't know for sure that it was the same as yours...

              I too like these instructions below. I tried many many other links and they didn't work. It was most likely something I was doing but I am up an running wire free. I am using (shamefully) compaq presario 2500 with the bcm4603 chipset. Thank you so much for the help!!!

                OK, using ndiswrapper (1.48) I have it working, but very slowly. In fact, it is operating more slowly than my internet connection. I'd say it has decided to run at less than 1 Mb/s.

                As I re-installed Kubuntu during this process, I am using KNetworkManager again. The wireless connection itself is showing up as eth1 instead of wlan0.

                Any tips on how to get it up to 54 Mb/s?

                In addition, upon rebooting the wifi will not work unless I enter "sudo modprobe ndiswrapper" into the console.

                  Just an idea as to how slow, on wifi it is behaving slower than dial-up when I have a 6 Mb/s internet connection.

                    Follow the instructions to the letter. Use only the windows driver at the link provided and insure you have the right one for your adapter.
