External Modem - No browser Connectivity Kubuntu 7.10

I'm trying Kubuntu in the live CD mode. I have an external Creative Modem Blaster 5620 on COM 1. I used the kppp app to configure my connection and everything seemed to work fine. The modem dials out, connects and supposedly authenticates correctly. kppp says the connection is established and active. When I use the Konqueror browser, I cannot connect to any sites e.g. google or the Ubuntu support site. I get an error connecting message each time. The browser is setup to connect directly to the internet and of course there is no issue with a firewall that I am aware of. Is this an issue because I am using the live CD? I'm reluctant to jigger my HD to install the OS if I'm not sure I can get internet access working.
