    Re: I freaking give up....

No it's USB same with the mouse. That matter? I could get a PS/2 key board and hook up if it does.

No. You don't want to have a PS/2 keyboard connected. Just eliminating possibilities.

Before we began all of this; when you first posted; were you ever able to use your keyboard when the Grub Boot menu displayed, or did you ever even try?

Brain just kicked in! The default color settings result in the Grub Boot menu being white text on a black background. You can't 'see' the movement of your down/up arrow keys!! That said now, are you still saying that when you press the F6 (Function key F6) that nothing happens

Right F6 does nothing. In fact I can't get num lock or caps lock to even work. Nothing. ESC or anything. Its as if it wasn't hooked up at all.

            Re: I freaking give up....

But it works when you first boot the PC, given that you can press the key(s) to get into the BIOS. This is indeed a puzzle.

I would conduct a test. Reboot and enter the BIOS setup and re-enable the onboard audio card. As that is the only change to the BIOS you made .... Save the change and allow the PC to continue to boot. Once at the Grub Boot menu, see if the keyboard works.

OK done and still the same thing. No responce from the key board on the Grub menu. Tried F6, Esc, arrow up and down, e and c as they are listed as options on the Grub menu page. Still zero.

I'm stumped on the keyboard issue. I've never heard of that before. :P It simply doesn't make any sense.

LOL welcome to my introduction to Linux :P

So should I just turn it off in BIOS along with the on board sound card and try that? Or edit a file in Grub. I mean I know this is going to be just what I want it's just a matter of getting it set right.

Thanks for all the help so far.

                    Re: I freaking give up....

It isn't the Grub menu.lst that's causing the keyboard issue. At least, nothing in it could/would result in completely disabling the keyboard. It simply has to be something else, and as at the point that the Grub menu is being run, only Stage 1 (or 1.5) of the Grub boot process has been executed, we aren't even running the kernel yet. That simply leaves the BIOS.

Again, if I were in your shoes, I'd be exploring what's in the BIOS setup. I'd look at everthing, especially anything that looked like it had anything to do with keyboards.

                      Re: I freaking give up....

OK, back and trying all this again. I had to step away for a bit or I was going to drop the box in the river LOL. OK so I booted today and had a red X over the speaker. No mixer cause I took out the PCI sound card and I'm using the on board one. So I go back to the "Comprehensive Sound Problem" link and start over. Heck been there so much almost don't need a link for the web address. So I follow the directions again So now I have a normal speaker, still no sound but no red X either. Ok, I get too
                      ALSA driver Compilation
follow the directions there get the "blue" box and pick the hda-intel driver (this is what I was told when I first started fighting this in the alsa irc chat). OK
                      Code:
                      aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****

                      Code:

                      Capabilities: <access denied>
OK so far so good, right? But now I get too

                      Code:
                      sudo modprove snd-hda-intel
                      and I get

FATAL: Error inserting snd_hda_intel (/lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/updates/alsa/pci/hda/snd-hda-intel.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

I have attached a copy of the dmesg file (or at least I hope I did it right) So what did I do this time?

OH I got my keyboard working at boot btw, just need to get past this issue then I'll go back and re-check the stuff listed in this thread.

                      Thanks,
                      James

                        Re: I freaking give up....

You 'red x' over the Kmix speaker is more likely the result of the kernel upgrade that was in the Adept Notifier when you logged on yesterday (or this morning). I have the same issue. KMix worked last night before I installed the following updated packages:

                        linux-headers-2.6.22-14
                        linux-headers-2.6.22-14-generic
                        linux-image-2.6.22-14-generic
                        linux-libc-dev

Sound was still working after the upgrades, but I hadn't performed a shutdown/restart. This morning when I turned on the PC, KMix has the red x and when you put the mouse cursor over the icon you see: "Kmixer cannot be found"

I performed a simulated removal of kmix (sudo apt-get remove --simulate kmix) to make sure doing so wouldn't adversely impact the system - it doesn't. But rather than remove the package, I opted instead to reinstall it. Again, I tested the action (sudo apt-get install --reinstall --simulate kmix) and received not error messages or other indications that reinstalling kmix would 'fail' or otherwise create problems. So, after quiting KMix, I reinstalled (sudo apt-get install --reinstall kmix), performed a normal shutdown/restart and then launched KMix (K Menu | Multimedia | KMix - Sound Mixer). No go. Still the red x, and KMix still reports "Kmixer cannot be found".

I have to believe that something about the four linux* package updates last night has messed somehow with the path used by KDE (but that's only a guess, as EVERY OTHER PROGRAM works properly - only KMix is borked).

I believe that what is at fault here, is the path used by the system got changed and no longer includes the logged in users home directory, which contains the users installed (hidden) application configuration files.
