New to Kubuntu

Hi All,

I just installed Kubuntu 7.10 on my Toshiba A-105 laptop. So far so good. I only have 2 problems right as of right now.

1. When I boot and it loads my log in screen. The fonts are so large you can't read what it says. Now I know what it wants so I can get it loaded. And once I am loaded it looks fine. How do I fix this?

2. When I try too play music with Amarok, there is hardly any sound. If I turn the master volume all the way up and the volume from Amarok all the way up and press my earphones very close to my ear's I can almost make out some noise. So what's up with that?

I am 100% sure I'll be bugging y'all tons. I am looking forward to learning to use Linux. I have spent some time doing my research and I believe it will do everything I want it too and do it better.

I also have Kubuntu running on a Toshiba A-105 and I had no sound when I installed it last week. I followed this guide and it fixed the sound. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449

2. Maybe check the levels in alsamixer. Open konsole and type: alsamixer
you will see the levels for the various channels and can select and change them using the arrow keys, I suspect the issue may be that one of these is set very low

Hey,

I also followed the link maxuser listed. I think I did everything it said too. When I open alsamixer I get:

Master: 00

PCM: 100<>100 (In Yellow, if that matters)

MIC: 0<>0

Caller ID is off

Off-Hook is off

Of course when I was following the instructions, when I got to step 4 which says:

(4) Now go back to the shell and type
Code:
sudo modprobe snd-
Now, press the TAB key BEFORE pressing the ENTER key to see a list of modules. Try to find the module that matches the driver you found in step 3.


So I type: sudo modprobe snd-SB450

and I get: FATAL: Module snd_SB450 not found.

If your Main output is 0/ [dB gain=mute] rather than Master 100/ [dB gain=0.00] try using the up arrow to set it to, say, 80/ [dB gain=-8.00].

If main=master it will not let me arrow up too change it. This is what is says when I highlight master:

There is not dB gain listed under master. And there is nothing listed by "Capture" and "All" it is blank.

As you can see there is a LOT of information listed here. So I need to know what the chip set is so I can move on to step 3:

(3) Check to see if the ALSA driver for your sound card exists. Go to http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/ and search for your sound card (chipset) manufacturer in the dropdown box. You'll be given a matrix of the sound cards made by the manufacturer. Try to match the chipset you found in step 2 with the driver(green hyperlink text).

I thought it was SB450, but now I'm not so sure cause alsamixer says:

Chip: Realtek ALC861

So is that my chip set I need to look up? Or is it the ATI SB450?

I'm sorry to post so much and for this one to be so long. I just really would like to get the sound up and running. And sorry for the different sized fonts... it's the way it posted when I copied it over to here.

So my ALSA driver for this card exists, right?

So...

For example, my driver is a via82xx so I would type, sudo modprobe snd-via82xx.

So I enter

sudo modprobe snd-SB450

So means the drivers are not or did not install?

So on to the next step.

Getting the ALSA drivers from a *fresh* kernel

sudo apt-get --purge remove linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils

Went through it's list.

Same.

Re-booted as instructed.

Now when it says (uname -r) it means I should put in james -r because that's the user name, right?

Oooops, here's a problem, James, and it's easy to see how you could misunderstand.

The term "uname -r" is kind of a shorthand way of saying "the exact kernel that you are running at the time". It has nothing to do with your user name.

If you open a Konsole window and enter

uname -r

you will see that it reports the running Linux kernel, type and version. So, when you install the linux-headers package for your running kernel, you use the command

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r`

as a way to avoid having to type out (with no errors) the full kernal nomenclature. Also note that the characters surrounding uname -r are NOT single quote marks -- it is the lower-case character on the tilde (~) key on the upper left of your keyboard.

I don't actually know if this is the cause of your problem or not -- try pasting it into your Konsole from this post and see if things work differently.

The more modern version of that command format is

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r)

although the older version still works just fine. Why do you suppose they changed it?
