    Fragmentation of the Hard Drive?

1st - I have read that linux based systems do not generally suffer from file fragmentation. Why is this?

2nd - I have heard that running torrent and/or gnutella apps causes a lot of fragmentation on linux hard drives. Is this true?

3rd - Are there 3rd party defraggers that are stable and won't hurt my system if I decide to run torrent or gnutella apps?

    Thanks in advance!

Never heard that downloading torrents or using the gnutella network will fragment the data on the HDD. In any case somebody would clarify this point to us?

Because the filesystems commonly used under Linux - like ext3 and reiserFS - are designed by computer scientists, not MS monkeys; they actually work Folk wisdom suggests that as long as you keep a reasonable proportion of your partition free, fragmentation won't be a problem.

Here's an informative thread on Ubuntu Forum:

But the bottom line is as per James' folk wisdom -- make your partitions bigger than the file space you need, by a comfortable 25%, and you can safely find other things to worry about.
