Myth tv step by step?

I have been trying to make the switch to Kubuntu 100% but keep running into things that "just don't work" . The latest issue is trying to install myth tv. On the ubuntu forums is a nice walk through and the ability to install and configure using mythbuntu. Here I find cryptic references to different instructions, none of which are for kubuntu gutsy.
Must I become a programming guru before I can use kubuntu for anything?
Say what you will about windows, just popping in a disc and installing software is very convenient.
Could someone just point me toward instructions for installing and configuring myth tv on kubuntu gutsy?

mythtv is more or less an entire OS, and it is not the easiest to install/configure on an already existing system for the most part.

there is a pretty good ubuntu variant called mythbuntu , and there is also a lot of info on the ubuntu mythtv wiki page

I have mythbuntu installed , and it has a pretty good contol panel for setting up stuff, even for installing codecs and drivers, as well as even installing a full Ubuntu/gnome desktop along with it. I don't know if you can install mythbuntu on top of an existing setup, but I wouldn't be surprised if you couls simply add their repos and ggo from there.

I only use myth on an old box just to watch downloaded tv shows, as well as dvd's on my tv (i have no dvd player standalone) but I don't have a tuner card or anything fancy

Thank you for the quick responses. The user community is a big part of my attraction to Kubuntu and how I've resolved my past issues.

once installed I can't locate the mythbuntu control cetre. I assumed this is due to differences between KDE and gnome. I tried running mythbuntu via command line but get an error message "Could not run the specified command."
I have been all over various forums and installation guides. Some are for the front end, some are for the backend, some for both. After completeing these I am then told "now just link them to your mysql and make sure your setting are correct."
I am not afraid of the command line. I enjoy learning as I am doing and have learned a great deal about linux already. My frustration comes from cryptic referencse such as this. When did I create a mysql db? What is it for? How do I connect to it?
I have faith that I can make this work if I can find lucid directions.

Yes, for some reason, when installed from the repos on top of kubuntu, mythbuntu-control-centre does not create an icon in the menu. Very helpful. Search areound and you will find an entertaining rant on the subject. Just type alt-f2 or K>Run Command and mythbuntu-control-centre and click ok and you will be off to the races.

Your mythtv frontend will have an icon under multimedia. If you installed a backend, you will have entries under system and settings (along with alot of other unnecessary gnome crap).

If this is going to be a backend/frontend that you are going to use primarily for TV/PVR, I suggest that you start over with mythbuntu 7.10. I have built a number of them and you are better off starting with a known configuration than trial and error. Unfortunately, the mythbuntu support is pretty weak. I have had to solve most of my own problems. The last with format/reinstall. Take heart, I am trying to share what I know over on the mythbuntu forum.
