converting files and burning to dvd

hello guys, I am new to linux and wanted to know if there is a program out there or some way I can convert files and burn them to dvd. In windows I used nero for this but I have been unable to find anything close to this in linux. I have avi and wmv files I would like to convert to be able to play in my dvd player. any help??
