Resolution stuck at 640 x 480

I am completely new to linux and kubuntu. I am trying to make the change from Windows. First, I tried Ubuntu and it was allright but when I tried Kubuntu I loved it. I just can't seem to change the resolution from 640x480! It's not an option in kcontrol or in the system settings. This is what I've done so far

I read a thread saying to check xorg.conf so I did and it had the right video card (onboard intel i810) and the right monitor (sylvania tf721) with lots of resolution options listed.

I'm super new and I want really bad to make this work for me. Any help an suggestions would be appreciated.

I figured it out. I had to edit my display settings because the monitor was just "plug and play" so I picked a sylvania monitor that was really close to mine. (picked sylvania F74 I have sylvania F721). Now two settings work, 640x480 and 1024xSomething.

I'm so glad I can set it on a smaller one but still, I would like the other settings to work and I would like to use the drivers for Sylvania LF721. Is there any way to update the drivers?

Ensure that you have the xserver-xorg-video-i810 package is installed (K Menu | System | Adept Manager)

My monitor resolution is stuck at something considerably lower than its recommended 1680 X1050. I ran dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, deselected the wrong settings and chose 1680 X 1050 (as well as a setting below and a setting above). But when I go to kControl to change the setting, the old wrong settings are still showing there, but my new settings aren't a possible choice. What am I doing wrong? (Thanks in advance!)
