    Downloads Timeout or "Stall"

Help Please, New to Linux, searched Forums and tried several things but nothing has worked.
Below is a little about my system
    • KUBUNTU 7.04, Feisty Fawn
      P4 2.80 2 gigs RAM 160 Gig HD formatted EXT3
      ASUS P4P800-E mobo
Onboard Marvel Yukon Gigabit Network Card
      Behind D-Link router
Satellite Internet connection = High Latency of 1200ms

I seem to be able to browse web pages, BUT, I can't download anything.

If I try to download a file like Flash Player, the Download hangs.
Windows computers are able to download files just fine.
Here is a link to an image which shows what I'm talking about.
I started the download twice which explains the 2 spikes in the SysGuard image.

Adept Package Manager downloads STALL and eventually fail after 2-3 minutes.
I can fetch an update list..but the actual updates stall/hang after about 3-4 items download, the 4th or 5th one will hit 12-32% and just HANG -- eventually after 3 minutes - Adept gives up and displays a generic error message of some sort.

I've tried varying my MTU settings in interfaces.conf from 1000 to 1492 as one forum posting suggested -- No change

I've tried adding my ISPs NameServer to Resolv.conf as suggested by another posting.

I've verified that I DON'T have a firewall turned on in KUbuntu by trying verifying that a firewall doesn't show up under the Internet App section.

    • Driver issue? -- if so, I can't update or download new drivers from within Linux, I'll have to do it via Windows I guess
Configuration issue? - Please give detailed description since I'm a Noob.
Could the Server I'm DOWNLOADING from not like the high latency 1000-1200ms latency of my satelite connection?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Re: Downloads Timeout or "Stall"

Well since I hadn't gotten a response yet and wanted to move forward with a SAMBA server.. I finally moved my server to a family members house who had DSL and got KUBUNTU updated...so I guess it WAS a case of a high latency connection.

    Unless someone can explain otherwise...

If this is True.. then updating packages over the internet appears to be both a PRO and a CON for Linux -- more specifically with High latency connections being an Achilles heel.

    Disappointing

Sorry to hear you are not having a good go of Linux thusfar. I don't know the answer to your questions but wanted to say hi and offer you a smile There are a lot of nice people here, I'm sure someone will help you out in due time.

Remember too that one of the cool things about Linux is that you get to shop around for free. At some point you should give Mandriva and OpenSuse a go as well. I am a beginner as well and I find that those two distros and Kubuntu are the best for my tastes and skill level.

Hope the rest of your time with Linux goes well for you bud.
