Subject says it all. So far I downloaded firefox as well and can't figure out how to install it.

I am making progress but cant do as much so far as my window boot can.

Judging by that I guess this is your first shot at Linux.

In other words, use Package - management tools, only resort to web-downloaded software if it's not in the repository.
In Kubuntu, you go K>Add/Remove programs..., select Firefox, apply and Adept will take care of everything.

Oops, almost forgot - to watch YouTube, you need Adobe's Flash plugin - I think (if it's not already installed) it's part of 'Kubuntu restricted extras' package. Don't know Ustream, but it looks to be Flash-based too.
So there you have it.

You are correct I am new to this. But thanks for your help! I am unable to get firefox or the adobe flash due to the fact they are greyed out and don't let me select them, when I use adept installer. I also wanted to install a game for linux but I didn't understand how to install it. Nexuiz looked pretty cool.

You haven't identified what version of *ubuntu you are using. I'm going to guess it's Gutsy. The (most likely) reason you have items grayed out is that you haven't enabled the repositories in Adept Manager, and you still have the CDROM repository active.

Open K Menu | Systems | Adept Manager | Adept | Manage Repositories
On the first tab, check the listed repositories. On the Third-Party Software tab, uncheck/delete the cdrom repository.

If Adept doesn't automatically fetch updates, click on Fetch Updates. This refreshes the package cache and will then allow you to select from the thousands of packages that are available.

Any sound card switches would be shown in KMix ('the volume control in tray'), but - like in windows - you have to enable them.
Preamp, I guess is an on-off option, so that would be a 'switch' - go to that tab and right-click anywhere and select "Channels...". The option should be one of those.

voodoos .......Don't get discouraged. I made the switch about a year ago or so, and after some time you will get used to how things work in the Linux world. I have found that if I plan to do anything major in Linux I check the forums first. Almost always someone else has already asked about it, and you can benefit from the wealth of information available. It saves time when you do it right the first time as opposed to having to fix a messed up system.If you take the time to research, you will find that there is almost always a way to do what you did in windows, in Linux. And it's all free how great is that.

When I post a problem or see a post for a problem I might have in the future I bookmark the solution. Like installing Flash or Java.

Unfortunately, not necessarily true. If you are using alsa, alsamixer will show many more options, some of which are not available in kmix.
