New to Kubuntu / Advice and Tips would be a great help...

Hi fellow kubuntu users and veterans, I'm kinda new with this O.S. thats why I would greatly appreciate any tips and recommendations any of you long time users might give. Before I Start my present setup is as follows:
Dell ISPIRON 1501(LAPTOP)
1gb Memory
60gb harddrive
AMD TURION64x2
Windows Vista Basic(Pre Installed)
What version of Kubuntu would you recommend I download?
I would like to do a dual boot because my wife uses the vista.
Does this mean I have to use the version with the AMD64?
Last 2 days ago I downloaded Kubuntu 6.06 dvd iso(intel), during the download
sequence it displayed a size of 3.4gb after it finished the total size was 1.8gb I dont know what went wrong but the said download worked fine after I burned it to a dvd. But I still haven't tried installing it, just used the Live CD features.
Hope long time users and veterans can give me valued input before I jump to using the Kubuntu OS.

Rationale

Having a separate partition for /home is always a good idea, since it lets you reinstall your system without losing valuable personal data. This can be especially useful in a distro like Ubuntu, where users have the chance to upgrade their install quite often (every six months) and might want to perform a clean install to avoid potential problems. Nevertheless, and while some other distros out there already do this automatically, Ubuntu doesn't.
