    Help With Kubuntu Boot

I just restarted my computer and i tried to boot into kubuntu with my dual boot windows xp
but when i did it came up with this automatic disk remounting thing....i dont know what this is but then after it was done
it asked for my username and password, which i entered
then it gave a command line. i dont know what 2 do. I tried rebooting but the same thing occured
    can anyone help me?
any advice or answers would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

Can you remember the exact message you were given? Without that the best we can do is guess.

But here's my guess: you've done something accidentally to break X. At the command line try typing "startx" and press Enter... if I'm right, you'll get some error ("E:") lines that should point us in the right direction.

ok so i typed in "startx" in the command line and this is what i got:

      fatal server error:
      no screens found
XIO: fatal IO ERROR 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ".0.0"
after 0 requests (o unknown processed) with 0 events remaining.

Okay. What you want to do is reconfigure the xserver, as it isn't recognizing your video card. If you cursor ends in a $ sign, then type:
        Code:
        sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
If your cursor ends with a # sign, then type:
        Code:
        dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Answer the questions. If you don't know the answer to any, accept the default. When you are asked about your video card: if you don't know or are unsure, pick VESA. Continue to the end. This will give you a working xorg.conf file.

Perform a normal shutdown and restart:
        (cursor is a $ sign)
        Code:
        sudo shutdown -r now
        or
        (cursor is a # sign)
        Code:
        shutdown -r now
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

              Re: Help With Kubuntu Boot

Let's look in /etc/X11 and see how many 'different' xorg.conf files there are. We know that there are least two. Open a console and type:
              Code:
              ls -l /etc/X11/xorg.conf*
Copy and past the listed files.

                    Re: Help With Kubuntu Boot

Did you install the nvidia driver before, or after you made your initial post in this thread? In other words, did you have a working display, installed the nvidia driver, then had no display, which prompted you to post here?

Okay. Now that you have a working display, you will want to install the 'correct' nvidia driver. There are several How To's in the How To section of the Forum for installing drivers for nVidia cards.
