Partitioning to Dual Boot with Kubuntu Installer

    Hey,

I'm installing Kubuntu on a new computer using the default installer and partitioner. I'd like to partition it so I have room for both Linux and Vista.

I went with the manual partitioning, and can see sda1,2,3 and 5. I'm not sure what those are. Anyone have advice about what to change?

device type mount point size used
    /dev/sda
    /dev/sda1 fat16 /media/sda1 82MB 33MB
    /dev/sda2 ntfs /media/sda2 10737MB 4700MB
    /dev/sda3 ntfs /media/sda3 306566MB unknown
    /dev/sda5 fat32 /media/sda5 2683MB 782MB

We have some Vista dual-booters here who actually do it. i haven't because I don't have Vista. So I refer people to a site I *have studied* and would use if I had Vista:

The specific link you want to follow is How to dual-boot Vista with Linux (Vista installed first) (linked from within the site Qqmike gave you). What you need to pay attention to in the guide are the steps to Shrink the Vista volume. If you don't do this, you aren't going to get Linux installed. What the guide doesn't tell you, is that you should deactivate Restore points in Vista (if it is active) and then delete any restore points that were created. This will free up a lot of additional space, and should be done before you Shrink the volume.
