When you are using the Nvidia driver, it's better not to try to adjust the resolution by editing /etc/xorg.conf manually. Instead, do Alt-F2 and enter "kdesu nvidia-settings" without the quote marks, give your password, click the "X Server Display Configuration" menu item, and then use that utility to adjust the resolution. When you have it the way you want it, click the "Save to X Configuration File" button, choose "save" and it will write the correct entries into /etc/xorg.conf.
