My adventure in the land of Kubuntu 7.10

Downloaded Kubuntu 7.10-dvd i386, now what?

    Hello,

I am using xp now, and thinking to reformat my desktop and install Kubuntu, i have look for articles about how to install kubuntu step by step, but all of them are not specific and they always assumed that you want to install Kubuntu in an already os driven desktop/system (i mean double OS on one system) and using Live CD.

I have downloaded finish Kubuntu 7.10 dvd iso by torrent, and it is still seeding by the time i am typing this.

    My desktop specs
Intel Pentium 4 2.66ghz 2.70ghz 512mb of ram. (i know it is old, but no money to buy a new system >_<)
    Nvidia 6600GT
Samsung Hard disk 80gb with no partition

I would like to ask some newbie question, which probably you guy had answered before (so sorry about it, but i tried the search function and i am at lost)

    1. What should i do now? do i need to burn it to DVD first, or can i install Kubuntu directly(using daemon tools or something like that)

    2. If i can install directly, is it mean i will lost all my files as in reformat everything?

    3. My graphic card is Nvidia 6600 GT, when i search for available driver, i choose Linux Display Driver - x86 is it correct?

    4. What is Live CD, was the one that i downloaded is a Live, i downloaded it from Kubuntu site.

    5. Are there any more requirements to install Kubuntu?

    6. Oh one more thing, maybe this look like an idiot question, do i need driver for cd-r/dvd rom drive installed first before in install the OS if i to re-format the desktop?

    >_<

    Thank you in advance.

Re: Downloaded Kubuntu 7.10-dvd i386, now what?

    To answer your questions:
    1) The best method would be to burn the DVD as an .iso image (don't use the default Windows utility, you have to use an application that supports the burning of .iso images; if you don't have such an application, check out CDBurnerXP - it's my preferred Windows CD/DVD burning utility, and it's FREE). There is an application called Wubi that allows you to install *buntu in your Windows partition, without having to mess around with partitioning and whatnot, but it's still in beta development (feel like being a pioneer ) - I would suggest the 1st method, however.

    2) If you use Wubi, you shouldn't lose any files (always backup, just in case), however, in my opinion, it would probably be best to resize your Windows partition using the GParted Live CD (follow this guide), and install Kubuntu as a separate partition in the free space. You can then use the GRUB bootloader to boot to either Kubuntu or Windows (GRUB is configured automatically for you during the installation process).

    3) When you install Kubuntu, it should automatically configure your system to use the "nv" driver, which works OK; you'll probably want to check into Envy, it will download, install, and configure the appropriate Nvidia driver for you. Let me know if you need help installing it (if you want to use it).

    4) A Live CD is just basically a CD you can boot to, that contains a window manager (provides application windows rather than just a command line interface). You have 2 choices with Kubuntu: a Live CD (graphical application windows) or an Alternate CD (command line interface).

    5) You have more than enough system resources to run Kubuntu.

    6) Any CD/DVD-ROM driver you need should be included on the installation DVD.

I'm just a little confused. I downloaded Kubuntu 7.10-dvd i386. I'm trying to burn it to dvd. The thing is when downloaded it comes as a rar file that's cool no problem. Then when you unrar the file there is no iso files. Just regular program files. Where do I find the iso file to burn. Thanks for the help in advance.....

Re: Downloaded Kubuntu 7.10-dvd i386, now what?

You're doing something wrong when downloading -- it is NOT supposed to be, or look like, a .rar file. Here's the page where you start:

          http://www.kubuntu.org/download.php

Then, after you pick your continent and get to a mirror site, and assuming you need the i386 architecture, and that you want to download the "Desktop CD" not the "Alternate CD", you want the file named "kubuntu-7.10-desktop-i386.iso"

When it is done downloading, open your CD burner, and choose "burn ISO image", and set the speed to 4X.

Don't unrar the file, just rename the extension to .iso there you have an image file. I did before with the psp game >_<.

And i have installed Kubuntu 7.10 it is so exciting... i really love the interface and everything, but one problem is, it can not detect my network card? but before it can detect, so a bit confuse, now even the system can not reboot >_<

Yes, that should work, as long as you did download the correct file and you burn it as an .iso file.

@cleodux, as to your new issues, can you elaborate any? What kind of network card do you have and what do you mean the system can't reboot? Does it just load to a black screen with a blinking cursor on the top left, or do you receive a "GRUB error ..." at boot? If you can provide a little more info, we can very likely fix the problem.

                Hi integr8e,

Sorry for writing very confusing post up there >_< actually it just hang, so i reboot manually, it is all ok now, look like it can not detect my network card, then i browse the help forum a bit and found this particular thread

                http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=12186.0

He is the same like me, with linux's zero experience, switching from windows. I type sudo pppoeconf on the konsole and after that i can ping my router(it is cable broadband connection to internet), but i can not assign the ip address, so i re-installed the kubuntu again >_<

After installed, everything seems ok, i never type sudo pppoeconf, then straight away assign ip(choose auto option after i put the default getaway ip) after assigned, the system can not detect my network card >_<

Is that mean that my network card is not linux supported? how about my router? it is an old router(SMC brand) and i don't even know if my network card has installer, i thought it supposed auto detect or something like that.

                EDIT:
It resolved! i can ping router and ping a system with the same LAN network, and then i try to ping external IP and it can ping >_<, after that i set DNS server as IP default getaway which also the same with DHCP server. (after googling around >_<) It just that knetwork manager can not detects anything.

It is actually quite simple, it just that i never touch this OS that is why everything look hard!

This is so exciting at last, now i can browse the net, ktorrent and konversation also came inside the package ^^ best Christmas give ever

Oh and Merry Christmas(if you are celebrating it) and Happy Holidays!

PS: i will post again if new problem occurs. Meanwhile i am going to read the sticky useful tips for newbie thread and find all codecs that i need for media player working properly

Cool! I am celebrating Christmas, it's the best holiday of the year (birthday of my Savior, you know ); I'm just about to head out to my aunts house for dinner. As to codecs and whatnot, you may want to look into adding the Medibuntu repository to your list of repos (repositories - lists of locations your computer looks for software); it provides you with various codecs and applications not included in the standard Ubuntu repos. Please, if your thinking about it, don't install Automatix - it will break your system; all the extra software you'll need is included in the Medibuntu repo. The main codecs you'll likely need are the ffmpeg, win32codecs (or w64codecs if your on a 64bit system), lame, libdvdread, and libdvdcss packages. There are others you can add, but those should give you a good head start (note: you need the Medibuntu repo to install the w32codecs and libdvdcss packages). If you need anything else, just let us know - we'll be here awaiting your request; oh, and welcome to the Kubuntu forum

                      Hi it is me again!

I don't know is it because i am idiot, stupid? or just plain dumb, i can not figure out how to install Firefox.

Use the Adept Manager, yes, i did the sudo aptitude update thingy, and apt-get install firefox, i can not remember what it said, but in the Adept Manager firefox is already installed, and it is 2.0.07 ver, so i want to update it to 2.0.0.11 wait forget updating, If it is installed, and how do i run it? >_<

                      Edit
Nooo... the adept installer showed grey(firefox) how i can tick the option?

Use KMenu>System>Adept Manager to mark the Firefox package, then right-click on that line and choose "reinstall". Click the "Apply" button on the top menu and it should be reinstalled.

When i clicked the apply changes button, got error pop up message. It said could not download something something. >_<

                          Edit:
Sorry for being an idiot ^^;; after 2 hours trying figuring out what is going on, i finally clicked manage repositories function(on adept manager), which i found out all the boxes all unticked by default. (sources for download). So now i manage to install Firefox (finally!) and i don't know how to launch it other then typing firefox on the konsole! >_< Wait, i found it!(after clicking some of the icons) root->user->share->applications!

So now what i need to do is create a symbolic link right? to put the shortcut icon on desktop? well i swear i read the guide somewhere, i will post my findings again later.

Never mind just found out it is automatically add on the K start menu.

Anyway, i have a question (a stupid one) when i look in to the Process Table, there are so many processor that are running, my question is what are they? and most of them looks like applications which auto start when the system reboot. As some one who always want to know(something new and weird) i clicked almost all the application on the k menu, Looks like they all still running behind, even though i did exit the applications. Is there any way to auto kill or off the auto start application on start up?

What is getty means? can i kill them?

I have no idea how i can have 97 process running >_< even with XP i always freak out when i see 30 or more process running at the same time.

Uh One more, it look like my adept-updater updates everything that it can updates now(downloading), is it good or bad? because there are so many applications that i don't understand or don't need it and i configure adept-manager to auto updates all. Well as long as it is not installed(using adept-installer) is it ok?

Why i have desktop 1 and desktop 2 running at the same time? solved. they come in default >_<

                          Thanks you >_<

(this thread beginning to looks like my adventures with Kubuntu-diary >_<)

Don't be so hard on yourself, you're just new and haven't learned your way around yet. I struggle with the same thing (being hard on myself), but it's not good for either one of us, in fact, it's very detrimental and effects our abilities to accomplish anything we try to do. Let's - both of us - try to be a little more positive, we'll be much better off

                            Anyway, to your questions:
                            1) What is getty? (i.e. getty is good - don't disable it )

                            2) Many of the processes are for applications you currently have running; many of them also are automatically loaded at startup. Kubuntu, by default, saves each session before you reboot, and reloads it when you log back in (similar to Firefox's session restore feature). You can disable it by opening KMenu, and clicking "System Settings -> Advanced tab (on the top) -> Session Manager -> On Login -> Start with an empty session"; you can also configure which processes you want to have run at startup by going to "System Settings -> Advanced tab -> System Services -> 'Administrator Mode...' button on bottom-right", clicking each service (process), and modifying its settings. If you don't know what a particular process is, feel free to research it or just ask; generally, it should be safe and won't do anything harmful to your computer (as a wiseman once told me, "this isn't Windows...")

Wah Thank you for the explanations, after i looked, actually there is not much processes running on start-up.

                              next question.
before the graphic card got problem, so i removed and re-installed nvidia-glx-new, and it looks ok, until today, when i turned on desktop, the resolution suddenly change to most higher (wide screen >_<) so i edit as root the xorg.conf i change it to 1024x768, then restart but i decided to change again to higher 1400x1050? but after restart, it still goes to 1280x1024 and the graphics is not exactly in the center >_<
