    install linux without CDromdrive

    Ok, it's going to be a toshiba ex ME laptop which I want to install kubuntu to, what are my options if there is no CDrom drive, I think I have a floppy drive, and also connection to the Internet too
    (background: the laptop will cost me 200hundred francs and if I can get kubuntu running on it, I will happy because I can buy ten old laptops for the price of one running vista and if that laptop gets stolen just like my other one was the day before yesterday, I am not bothered, imagine if it had been the usual 200thousand franc models)

    Without a CD Drive, I don't know. The CDs from Kubuntu are usually above the 600MB mark so having an install on floppy would be very cumbersome. There is a Linux boot floppy with CD support, but that would require you being able to connect an external CD drive. Is that possible for you to do?

      Check this out;

      You ought to look at the rest of the specs for this machine and make sure it has enough horsepower. You might also want to check and make sure all the hardware is supported. Good luck.

            Re: install linux without CDromdrive

            I was wondering if I could somehow swap the harddrive for a preinstalled linux one because that looks the simplest answer, but what would I need to do make that preinstalled linux boot from the harddrive, I understand that I might run into driver problems but I would still have the original harddrive if it failed, also I was wondering, also could I try wibi dual boot and then dump the ME, all advice welcome here, thank

              I doubt very much that that would work. You will run into more Hardware problems than you want.

              If you want to go the internet path I too think an external cd would be the best bet.
              Have a look here:

              or maybe ricardo.ch:

              What are the specs of that laptop? Maybe xubuntu is a better bet? You will need at least 500GB Ram and a decent video card. About 20-30gig HD wouldn't be bad either.

                Re: install linux without CDromdrive

                thanks fantan, looks like the external harddrive costs more than the computer(CHF200), but I am going to buy the laptop and keeping the original harddrive untouched try using another harddrive and see what the boot sequence offers

                will post back for help if I get the computer before others do, thanks

                  I'm sure you meant 500MB. I don't know of any human built PC that will accept 500 Giga-bytes of RAM!
