New to Kubuntu/Linux world and quite lost ...

    Hey all .

After a long time of denying i decided to listen to all the people around me and leave those Microsoft behind me .
I've dove in to the deep water and installed Kubuntu 7.10 , Of course the road to be confused wasn't too long

    1. Is there a way to install another Network Manager program ? Knetworkmanager is quite lame and doesn't support the networks at my college .
    2. A new software i've downloaded - How to install it ? I read a bunch of articles but still no disco .
    3. My machine run quite ok with Kubuntu but every few minutes you can hear it worn out and the fan working extra hours and making lots of noise . Is there a way to lower some of the stuff the System demends ? (Graphics and such)
    4. Where can i found drivers to my Video card (ATI) that suitable to Kubuntu ?

    Thank you in advance !

I assume the networks at your college are wireless. I like Wifi-radar.
    2. A new software i've downloaded - How to install it ? I read a bunch of articles but still no disco .
What is the software? Have a look at "How to install ANYTHING in Ubuntu!" at http://monkeyblog.org/ubuntu/installing/ (There are some small differences between Ubuntu and Kubuntu.)
    3. My machine run quite ok with Kubuntu but every few minutes you can hear it worn out and the fan working extra hours and making lots of noise . Is there a way to lower some of the stuff the System demends ? (Graphics and such)
What machine do you have and how much RAM has it got?
    4. Where can i found drivers to my Video card (ATI) that suitable to Kubuntu ?
One simple way is to use the script Envy which will download and install the correct driver. You can get it at http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html

      Thanks for the reply .
I'll try to download Wifi-Radar . A friend of mine uses NM-applet on another platform . Will it work on Kubuntu ?
      About the performance - I'm using a laptop by HP (Nx9000) with 750 RAM . actually i found this article - http://rudd-o.com/archives/2007/10/0...w-to-fix-that/
and i think it helped me a little , The comp is running a little bit faster . Any more tips ?
I guess it will run better after i'll install the appropriate driver for the video card , I'll try Envy .

      Thanks .

My specs are 1 gig ram and 256kb gfx card and if I put some windows effects on- mainly translucency then it will slow way down.

        Have you set any effects?

Nope , Effects off . It's not my main concern right now , It appears i can't install anything on my system .
I've downloaded something , Extracted it to a folder -> open the terminal and type './configure' and it writes bunch of stuff . then i write 'make' or 'make install' and get an error it can't do that . Did i do something wrong ?
There are some downloads that being installed via the package installer but after the installations the program don't work (Clicking on their executable file and nothing happened) .
          I'm really confused .

For the most part you don't need to compile!!! - you just need to install from repositories. Can you execute this command, in Konqueror Terminal Program, then copy and paste the result here so we can see what repositories you have enabled?:
            kdesu kate /etc/apt/sources.list
Have you got Synaptic Package Manager? It is probably the best package manager. When you are connected to the Internet execute this command, in Konqueror Terminal Program:
            sudo apt-get install synaptic

When i try to get Synaptic i get this messege - "Package synaptic is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

                Right!

EVERY line that starts deb or deb-src is disabled!

To enable it use the same command
                kdesu kate /etc/apt/sources.list
and remove the # in front of every deb and deb-src. The save Kate and close

                Then try installing again.

Sorry! Didn't read close enough. Says "Line commented out by installer because it failed to verify:"

Go to http://www.ubuntu-nl.org/source-o-matic/ and answer the questions. Then COPY and PASTE OVER your sources.list

Save kate and close, then try installing again.

Just thought I'd add a post explaining what it was that caused the repositories to all be disabled (commented out).

Basically, during the installation process the livecd attempted to access the internet. It was unable to do so and as a result it decided to disable to repositories as without an internet connection they would be unusable. Of course, once it was actually installed you were able to use the net, however the repos remained disabled. What arochester helped you do was to enable them. It's slightly odd behaivour (happened to me during the gutsy install as well) but you can see that the reason for it is not unreasonable.

                              I see , thanks .
Now the only problem left is installing my Video card driver .
I've installed Envy and tried to install the ATI driver it's coming with but encountered a weird (Maybe it's not weird , you tell me ) problem . After i restart the computer the system wont load . Instead there's a black "DOS" screen that asked me for my login and password , after i enter them nothing happened . The only solution i've got is to enter the "DPKG-reconfigure xserver-xorg" script and choose Vesa once again . After that the system works fine .
The problem exists with all the 3 drivers Envy comes with .
                              Any idia ?
