Having Issues installing Gutsy on Laptop

Hello. While i'm not exactly new to Kubuntu, but I'm not exactly expert neither. I've been having an ongoing problem with installing it on my laptop. Every time I try to use the Live disc, it works sometimes, but even once I do get it to work, and installed, its slower than a snake trying to last the winter, so I tried using the alternate disc, and when I hit install, all i get it a black screen! The LTS Versions work on it, but the LTS versions don't have what I need on them. The laptop is a HP Pavilion ze2000 purchased in 2005. It has an AMD Mobile Sempron, 512 MB of RAM, and a 40 GB hard drive. I really like Kubuntu, so I'm at a loss of what to do.

First question: does the laptop have an existing OS (Windoze) still on it??

Nope. Its using Kubuntu LTS right now. But like I said, It doesn't have what I need it for on it.

Okay. Second question: what version of *ubuntu are you trying to install? The LiveCD and the Alternate CD?

Third question: do you know what video chip the laptop has?

(Kubuntu 7.10, Gutsy Gibbon) I tired the Live CD, And I got it to work (After partitioning the disc, installing windows on one half, then installing redhat on the other half) but it was uber slow. Now I'm using the alternate, and I just get a black screen when I hit install. I know its working tho, because I hit check disc, and I could hear it running in the background (But alas, no screen to show me if the disc worked or not) I tried the LTS, And I got that to install without a hitch, so its weirding me out. Oh yeah, When I hit install with the Alternate, I get this MP-BIOS BUG 8254 Timer Not Connected to IO-APIC.

Its an n-Vidia, but I'm not sure

So your answer to my first question was incorrect; you do have other operating systems installed on the laptop. :P

In the partitioning, how much space on the 40G HD did you allow for Kubuntu 7.10? You have two other OS's installed: Windoze (what version?) and Redhat Linux.

I would also suggest, that you boot into Redhat and open a console and type the following command:
            Code:
            df -hT
copy and paste the output in a reply.

No, I DON'T have any other poerating systems on it. Those are the ones I HAD to install just to get Kubuntu to even boot unless they were both on their. I now Have Kubuntu LTS installed out of sheer exasperation of having to redo installing 2 OS just to get one to boot.

My bad. You're latter post made is sound as if those two OS's were already on the laptop.

Can you boot into Redhat? If you can, open a console and type the command I suggested and copy/paste the results. That command will show us how your HD is partitioned, the size of each partition, and how much space is used and available on each partition.

That means I'll have to reinstall Redhat. As far as I know, its whatever the automatic partitioner is for LTS for the entire disc is.

Okay, bear with me, as I'm 'an old guy' but, you don't have Redhat installed? I'm confused.

                    Before you started everything:

                    1) What OS was on the laptop?
                    2) What actions did you take, in order? (simple statements, please, like: formatted HD; tried to install [name of OS]; etc.

                      1) It was Windows XP Home edition, originally.
                      2) 1Loaded Live Disc, 2Had issues installing it with Live. 3Installed redhat, Noticed this worked better, but it didn't fully install, 4Partitioned into two equal halves, 5Installed Windows on one, 6Redhat on the other, 7Tried to install Kubuntu from Live disc, Got it to work, but it was buggy and Slow. Repeated Steps 4-7 3 times, got exasperated and installed Kubuntu Long Term Support, which worked, but doesn't have everything I need for college.

I see said the blind man. 8)

That's clear. Thank you. Your processor - AMD Mobile Sempron - Is it a 32- or 64-bit processor? The Kubuntu 7.10 LiveCD you have - is it for 32- or 64-bit processors?

Re: Having Issues installing Gutsy on Laptop

OK, I figured something out. It has to be a bug with th graphics card, because I hooked up one of my old monitors to it, and it shows up on the monitor (But not the Laptop screen)

                          Oh, to answer your Qs
                          its 32 bit
-and yes, the live AND alternate is for 32 bit.

Re: Having Issues installing Gutsy on Laptop

Given that you can 'see' with an external monitor connected to the laptop, but not on the LCD screen may be an indication that the video chip in the laptop is the source of the trouble.

If you boot the Kubuntu LiveCD, at what point does the screen go black? Do you boot to the initial menu? If yes, when you select to install, does it actually complete the install (running off of the CD of course - your 'testing' Gutsy) and get you to the Desktop? If yes, are you able to complete the actual installation, or at some point in that process does the screen go black?

You may want to use dibl's How to get started with no GUI and see if it helps you getting Gutsy installed.

Well, I've stopped using the Live CD, and am using the Alternate instead. It does go into the initial menu (Install, Test Disc, Etc), then after that, it goes black. On the Live disc, it would remain black until the actual OS GUI started, but everything before that is black. Now for the alternate disc, it just stays black period (Except for the initial menu), unless its hooked up to an external monitor (Like it is now)
