setting up Kubuntu 7.10 as a server

    Hello,

I am VERY interested in learning Kubuntu, but what I am planning on doing is doing a small business setup with kubuntu for the servers, and windows XP for clients. My question is, do I need to buy anything such as user CALS, or licenses for kubuntu to set it up as a server running DNS, DHCP, the main domain, probably proxy or running APACHE (small business of 12 people so 1 server all in one), and will it work with Windows, proabbly it will be added with SAMBA for file sharing and CUPS, will this network setup work? i will be running a Cisco Firewall so security is not a big deal on that end. sorry if i am saying CALS, windows has tromitized me with BUYINGthis and BUYING that user cal this licensing that... thank you

    Short answer - no

Although I hear one can donate to the project......

BTW you would only need to run the ubuntu server install, a Desktop Environment is completely wasted on a server, everything you need can be done from the shell
    Kubuntu
FreeBSD 8.1
OpenBSD 4.7
Meego

Ok so not kubuntu 7.10 but everything that i mentioned above such as having Windows XP as clients, and having Ubuntu 7.10 as the DHCP server, SAMBA, CUPS, and the domain/DNS, will that work?

      Thank you

        Printer sharing:

        Cups/samba

        DNS server

        DHCP server

The DNS and DHCP should be straight forward, the samba/cups may take a little work, check the 'man' pages once you have installed the server, and be careful of security when sharing, above all good luck Leave your Windows worries behind - things are so open 'round here there is a draft

If you need commercial support, the ubuntu team offer that also - and I hear it is very good:
