    (Newbie.) Looking for the correct sound input settings.

    Dear Forum Members

    To start my activities at this forum, I need to poke :-) you with a few nerdy questions on sound input.

    At the Kubuntu user mailing list I get so far only partial answers, so I try another way now to get the instructions I am looking for....

    So far I still did not yet manage to find the correct sound input settings. Following some advises that came in, I went to K-MENU --->SYSTEM SETTINGS --> Sound System ---> tab 'Hardware'.

    There the following 'Audio device' had been selected: 'autodetect'. I tried some of the other available options. This one delivers the best results so far: 'Advanced Linux Sound Architecture' (ALSA). After saving and activating ALSA,, the CR-CR-CR sound caused by a microphone opened via K-Mixer is still there - however slightly softer. But the sound input check of Skype still does not deliver any result. The only way I have found so far to get rid of the CR-CR-CR sound is to altogether MUTE the microphone function of K-MIXER, tab 'INPUT'.

    Following other advises, I went again to K-MENU ---> SYSTEM SETTINGS ---> sound system, tab 'hardware'. There I chose the option 'Full Duplex'. However, this does not really make a difference.

    Technical basic info with respect to my system is the folowing:
    Asus Laptop, P4M 2GHz, 512MB, 20GB, sound card "Crystal WDM Audio".
    The command 'lspci' at the shell console delivers the following 'Multi media audio controller':
    Intel Corporation 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02).
    Operating system: Kubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon.
    From the Windows partition of this laptop, I do manage to produce the right sound input. The 'Sennheiser' headset works well enough. The same applies for the internal mikes/ speakers of this laptop. So, it must be some software settings problem.
    Both from the Kubuntu and Windows partitions at the laptop, the speakers do produce the right sound OUTPUT.

    At this page I found a bit more probably relevant info on the soundcard I use:
    http://www.alsa-project.org/main/ind...odule-intel8x0

    There they advise me to give in 'modinfo soundcore' in the shell console. When doing so, I get the following voodoo info:
    filename: /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/kernel/sound/soundcore.ko
    alias: char-major-14-*
    license: GPL
    author: Alan Cox
    description: Core sound module
    srcversion: 548AA54AF08207316C104F8
    depends: (nothing written here.)
    vermagic: 2.6.22-14-generic SMP mod_unload 586
    If I have understood well that above mentioned part of the Alsa project website, I do not need to 'recompile my kernel'. However, all this info still not clarifies what are the correct sound input settings. Please explain via one or more of the following approaches:

    K-MENU --->SYSTEM SETTINGS --> Sound System ---> tabs 'Hardware' and 'General'.
    K-MIXER ---> left-click: volume regulator.
    K-MIXER --> right-click---> select master channel, or...
    K-MIXER --> right-click---> K-MIX ---> tab INPUT, or .)..
    K-MIXER --> right-click---> K-MIX ---> tab SWITCHES, or ...
    Some suitable command(s) via SHELL CONSOLE, or .....
    Any other approach useful according to you.

    I hope one or more amongst you are able and willing to help me a few steps further. Thanks in advance!
    Warm greetings!

    Bas.

    If you haven't tried it already, give this troubleshooting guide a try:
