fatal server error: failed to initialize core devices

    Hi there,

My specs: Acer aspire 1801 wsmi with Ati Radeon X600 PCi Express 64M 1440x900 resolution- Kubuntu Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 Always worked fine and never had any hardware issue whatsoever

yesterday I tried to connect a tv to my computer and set a clone screen.

I did not succeed. When I restarted I got a 800x600 screen. I tried to get my previous settings back but when I restarted I got this error in kdm

    - Starting DirMngr /etc/rc2.d/S20hotkey-setup: line 17: /proc/acpi/video/*/DOS: No such file or directory.
    - Startinf Powernowd:156: cannot create /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0//cpufreq/scaling_governor irectory nonexistent

    *CPU frequency scaling not supported

*Starting AVahi mDns/dns-sd Daemon avahi-daemon [ok]
*Starting DHCP D-Bus daemon dhcdbd [ok]
    *Starting Bluetooth Services [ok]
    *Starting anac(h)ronistic cron acron [ok]
*Starting deferred execution scheduler atd [ok]
*Starting periodic command scheduler crond [ok]
    *Checking battery state [ok]
    *Running local boot scripts (/etc/rc.local)

Since I could not launch anything from there I accessed the terminal with ctrl+alt+f1 and I tried, following the advice of many forums to reconfigure serverx (did almost 10 times)

I run startx and I got

    Fatal server error:
    failed to initialize core devices
    disable montype:2
    finished:PLL2
    finished:PLL1
    Entering Restore TV
    Restore TV PLL
    Restore TvHV
    Restore TV Restarts
    Restore Timing Tables
    Restore Tv Standard
    LEaving Restore tV

XIO: fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on server X ":0.0"
after 0 request (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

And that's where I am stuck

    Please gimmie my Kubuntu back!!!!

Probably this will get you back to a basic GUI, then you'll need to install the right driver for your ATI card:

I already tried to reconfigure xserver at least 10 times. It sees my ATI and recognizes all the settings automatically.

When I run startx I get the error I wrote in the post

      Cheers

I'm suggesting that it's not "seeing" correctly. If, at the beginning of the dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg script, you will choose "NO" to the autodetect, and then on the next screen choose "VESA", and then in the monitor section choose your favorite resolution, I think you'll end up with a GUI when you enter "startx".

Then you'll have to review the ATI driver installation processes, with which I am not familiar. :P

sorry for my not appropriate lingo.

I've already reconfigured xserver with VESA with no positive results. Any other suggestions?

          Cheers, Julius

Hmmm. OK, guess we'd better have a look at the log file, located at /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Also, this may be relevant to your situation:

After running sudo view /var/log/Xorg.0.log I got:

              Thanks for your help there

I just ran a quick search on this forum, using that error message, and found several examples -- although the one solution I found involved an Intel i810 chip, so that won't help you.

Your problem is definitely with the xorg.conf file and your video driver. If I were in your situation, I would download the Envy script installer from here and install it and use it to install the ATI driver again.

Of course, if you have no GUI, and you're not accustomed to un-archiving and installing from the command line, that makes the process a bit more complicated ... :P

If you can figure out how to get the file onto your /home/julius/Desktop and un-archive it, then the command to install it would be
                  Code:
                  sudo dpkg -i envy_0.9.9-0ubuntu1_all.deb
                  .

Does this help? I'm still a bit befuddled that a simple VESA display won't run a GUI on your system - I have not seen that fail before.

EDIT: Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh -- great! I was typing while you were solving a problem -- good job!
