wine/steam problem (known solution won't work!)

Morning,

I'm getting the well known "Steam fails to update at 26%" problem and the solution to this is to open up a terminal and do

wine C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamTmp.exe SelfUpdate "C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" 14


This would not work for me unless i change the paths to C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\, which I do change and has worked in the past but this time around i'm getting the error "wine: cannot find 'C:Program' - even though it is there and that is the right path!?

some alternative advice is:

or play around with the filenames (go into steam folder and use)
wine SteamTmp.exe SelfUpdate "Steam.exe" 14

im sure that would work but i can't cd into Program Files? the path is

/home/rob/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Valve/Steam

i can cd as far as drive_c but when i try cd Program Files i get the error

bash: cd: Program: No such file or directory


THis couldn't have happened at a worst time, just reached the finale chapter on Half Life! :P

I went straight to the Steam folder, right clicked on it and chose open with terminal, that got me round the above problem, so then I try

wine SteamTmp.exe SelfUpdate "Steam.exe" 14


and get hit with
