Check disk space utilization to ensure you are not 'running low' on disk space. Console shell and type:
    df -h -T
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

does it slow down for a while and then speed back up. Or is it slowing till it stops and then you are stuck there.

actualy my disk space utilisation is only 35%
The systems slow down to almost a freeze and stays like that..

          Open Konsole and enter
          Code:
          top
Then leave it running. When the system slows down, see what process is hogging all the resources -- it will be on top of the list.

              Type
              Code:
              top
in the terminal and leave it open while you are working,
You will see a list of apps and their usage.

Wel it solved, i replaced my dvdrom with an dvdwriter of another manufactor

Maybe in 7.10 this was solved..

But happy to work again in my favourite OS

                      Glad to hear it
Maybe you should post a thread in the gutsy forum for your "weird" dvdrom and see what the reactions are.
