(Both these projects work for Samsung SGH family phones, but if you are lucky yours may behave in a similar way)

Also does your phone have a (micro) sd card in it as I get the impression that when you plug it into usb it may act as a sd card reader:

Thanks again marshallbanana. The phone has a slot for a micro card however I don't have one in it.
I will have a look at those links and see what I come up with.
