Configuring Grub for Kubuntu on external hard disk

    dear Kubuntu users,

I have just installed Kubuntu 7.10 on my external hard disk (hd1); indows is on my primary hard disk (hd0).

-When my external hard disk is connected, the grub appears and allows me to choose which system I want to boot and it works fine.

-When my external hard disk is NOT connected, the grub can't launch and the error 21 occurs, I can run neither linux nor windows.

The grub is located in (hd1,1).

    I would like to know how configuring my grub to have the following choices ;
-When my external hard disk is connected I would like to have the grub make me choose between windows and linux.
-When it is not connected I would like to boot directly on Windows.

    Firstly, is it possible?
And secondly how to do so?

I have tried to change the order of boot hard disk in BIOS, putting my external disk in the first position but in this case the grub appears but all choices lead to errors (file not found).

    Thank you in advance

Yes, you can rig something up that should work. See the above posts for some choices. You just have to play around with things. It's fairly easy to do/learn, just be patient as you get various error messages, and keep you Live Kubuntu CD handy just in case, or Super Grub Disk.

A lot of this depends on *how* your BIOS boots from the external USB HDD.

In the How-To, read Step 6:

Step #1 Find out what your hard drives are named by Kubuntu and by GRUB
Step #2: Set up your external USB HDD following the directions provided by the manufacturer
Step #3: Install Kubuntu to the external USB HDD
      Step #4: Configure BIOS
      Step #5: Configure GRUB
Step #6: Optional: Configure other boot capabilities with the external USB HDD
