There was sound but there is none...

I just installed Gutsy on my laptop a few days ago and was surprised that the sound card etc was detected and working properly. But all of a sudden, it stopped working after a few reboots. the sound used to work on live cd as well, but now the live cd doesn't have sound too.

i can't seem to find out what's causing it but i think it started when i installed the drivers in windoze in another partition. does this in any way affects Kubuntu's sound system?? aren't they suppose to work independently??

another suspect is adept. adept seems to have problems downloading stuff (i don't know if this is my internet problem or is it a bug?) and it kept telling me that there is a problem downloading packages and it is broken and blah blah.. could this be a reason? i can't remember if there was an update package for the sound though.

i've tried to do this: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting and i got "success" till the "Check to see if the ALSA driver for your sound card exists" part. however, i can't understand what it tells me to do in the later parts...

    here's a screenshot of KInfoCenter's sound

what should i do? thanks in advance.

Okay, firstly did you find the ALSA driver for your sound card? and if so what was the drivers name?

If you are unsure of the answer to this then please just post the make and model of your soundcard.

I'm getting the same problem on my Compaq v3000. Sound worked on first boot of the LiveCD, then mysteriously went away after an install. Now it also doesn't work with the LiveCD...

Did anyone ever find a solution to this?
