Problem with Resolution, USB Hard Drive

I really like Linux, and have been wanting to use it for a while. Today I finally bit the bullet and reformatted my computer and installed dualboot of Kubuntu 7.10 + Windows XP (just in case).

I have used Linux only briefly before on other people's computers and live CD's.

I am using a HP Pavillion a1450n, with the onboard Nvidia GeForce 6150LE. In my system settings, it does not give the option to go higher than 800x600 resolution. Can someone walk me through fixing this? Try to keep it simple, if possible. I'm computers savvy, as far as Windows goes. But I haven't got a clue about Linux.

USB Hard Drive Problem: When I go into the Storage Media folder, and click on my external 250GB USB hard drive, it gives the error "hal-storage-removable-mount-all-options refused uid 1000"

    Thanks for reading

EDIT: Any links to must-read general Linux/Kubuntu guides would be very helpful. I'd like to be able to dive in as quickly as possible.

EDIT(2): In the K Menu, each item has "_: Entries in K-Menu: <whatever application> app name," before it, and it's kind of annoying. I can't really read most of the programs' full names because of it.

    Go to K > System Settings > Regional & Language >
Under the Locale tab, select your location in the top right drop down list.

resolution might be fixed if you install the video drivers. restricted-manager-kde should do this for you

From the error, I assume the USB hard drive is formatted in NTFS. By default, It is only readable for root(no writting). And you are not root, so you cannot read it too. There are many topics in this forum for mounting NTFS partitions. Try searching

This keeps popping up, so a search here will turn up what’s going on with this one:

          Open a terminal window (kmenu-system-konsole)
and type in (and hit enter) the following:

          Code:
          cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Paste the results of this here in the thread.
