BRAND NEW USER NEEDS ADVICE

i jsut installed... I've been using the synaptic a bit to install upgrades. i added the WINE repositoryand got the package. however i'm having issues with my new llinksys wireless network card and i can't get any of my games to install. I can't even tell if i got WINE working.
from the various posts and chat rooms i've observed i'm thinking i need to use the terminal to get things done but i have no experiance with that. If i could have someone point me in the right direction to get me started i think i could figure it out.

Can't help wrt the wireless card, but as for Wine...

Wine is very good, but it's not perfect; particularly for Windows games. If you have Windows installed on your computer, you can test if Wine is set up and working (easiest to do this from a shell prompt, so open up Konsole...):

$ cd /windows (or whereever the Windows drive is)
$ cd WINDOWS (or possibly WINNT)
$ wine notepad.exe

If all is well, Notepad should appear after a few seconds. If not, copy and paste the output from Konsole.

was your wifi card working in kubuntu befor? if not that mean you probably need to load the windows driver, and as a former and still n00bie I had this problem not to long ago, you should do a search in the forums for my post called "setting up wifi for n00bs" it gives step by step instructions and terminal commands. as well as were to obtain your driver. Next Wine is relly only good to run small windows applications and some old dos games or native microsoft games, not good for commercial games. If you have old dos games you want to run you should do a google search for dosbox, and if its commercial games you want to play like unreal tournament or doom, you would have to get Cedega, wich you have to pay for, cause they have to licence the win32 codecs and directX drivers from windows so they can install and play in linux, its only $5 a month, and it works very well, some games such as unreal tournament 2004 and doom 3 have linux install .bin shell scripts, you just have to go to their web pages and download the linux installer and have the original windows disks. so to recap first get wour wifi going, or get wired internet so you can download your drivers, then get cedega if you really want to play games, you need the internet for that as well since you have to download and install point to play cedegas gui interface. see how it all goes and keep us posted. thanks for the input guys. i have two problems with getting my WIFI working.

one it keeps telling me that i have an invalid driver. i think i can fix that one because the driver i tried is the one from online. i gonna try using the one from the CD the card came with.

the other problem i have is that when i try to go into kwrite and type in the wlan0 mac nuber it gives me an error message saying that my admin UID number is wrong (1000 instead of 0) how do i fix that?
