Thumb Drives

I have used my 512 Kingston, 1gig Verbatim thumbdrives, and my 4gig iPod all without having to mount these devices, and being able to use them in either Gutsy or Win XP

I just purchase a 4gig Cruzer and reformatted it so the file system is the same as the 512 and 1gig, but Gutsy does not see it. So now I am confused.

Why would the first three listed work, but the new drive does not? It does not seem to be a mounting or file system problem, so I am not sure where to turn. I did check the system settings in Gutsy and it is not found.

WIn XP sees it every time. Any clues? Is Fat32 the easiest file system for Gutsy to handle?

FAT32 is the old MS-DOS file table system -- not the most reliable in the world. If you don't mind reformatting it to NTFS (I assume you're sharing with Windoze), here's an approach that should work:

I am not sharing the system with Windows, I have two separate systems, one with Windows and one with Kubuntu. I am trying to move some of my files from Windows to Kubuntu, and thought the thumb drive would be the quickest.

All of my thumb drives are formatted in FAT16. I have used fdisk to remove and create partitions, then use mkfs.vfat to write the file tables. I would recommend using mkfs.vfat for yours.

I just looked at the file table for my 2GB Cruzer, here it is:

michael@laptop:/dev$ sudo fdisk sdb

The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 3981.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,
and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
  (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)

Command (m for help): p

Disk sdb: 2055 MB, 2055019520 bytes
16 heads, 63 sectors/track, 3981 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 1008 * 512 = 516096 bytes

Nope... FAT32. How did you format your drive? Additionally, I used the U3 removal tool in windows to remove the U3 Launcher.

Interesting. My 1GB Cruzer reports:

Disk sdb: 1020 MB, 1020076544 bytes
32 heads, 63 sectors/track, 988 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 2016 * 512 = 1032192 bytes

I never have any problems using it with XP or Linux.

I do believe that my other thumb drives are formatted in FAT16. The Cruzer was formatted by the U3 removal tool in windows to FAT32. Either way both file tables work well with all three computers here.
