I have a 250 Gb drive thats full up, and when connecting to a usb 2 ide converter I managed to place the power in the wrong way round > thus killing the logic board.
I have since bought the exact ( same firmware apparently etc...) drive and tried switching the logic boards..... The drive does spin up but then stops spinning and fails to appear anywhere (obviously not working)
Now I read I may have success doing a 'live swap' by:
Starting my replacement drive
Getting the drive to goto sleep? (stop spinning atleast)
(Carefully) unscrewing the logic board (should have loaded firmware etc.. by now)
Replacing (still live) logic board onto old harddrive
Best steps to get to 2nd step (sleep). Just umount it, or is there a setting I can use in Kubuntu somewhere?
I'm not paying £1000's to get the data off and yes this is a last desperate attempt (apart from swapping platers)
