Re: Live CD not loading after boot screen.

Right was wondering that as I have seen numerous people having problems with wireless, unfortunately due to positiong on computer and the phone line entrance I can't stay wired permanently but can hook it up if vital so I'll give that a go tomorrow night seen as I have house guests right now and can't move things around.

    Damn right progress is good!!!!!

Have to admit just after seeing the desktop and the menu's I think this looks great everything just has a, dunno how to put this, smoother look to it.

Can see already though how installing devices is gonna be more difficult did try to install the sound card, at least thats what I think I was doing and it said it was re-starting the sound system or something along those lines but it never quite made it 100% before starting all over again, iono maybe this is just because it's the live cd and not running from the HDD, I'm probably wrong though and was probably doing it wrong lol.

Have to also say this is one of the few learning experiences I am quite enjoying!!

You seem to have a 'good attitude' about the move over to Linux. That's good - really. If you can accept that 'how it goes in Windoze' isn't going to be the same as it goes in Linux, you will be ahead of the game. Getting things to 'just work' in Linux is different that working in Windoze. That is not to say that everything in Linux is a struggle - far from it. But as I've stated, video, audio, and wireless 'issues' seem to be the biggest three "challanges" for users moving to Linux from Windoze. But again, not everyone experiences all three, or even any of them. It all depends on the hardware that Linux is being installed on. But, in almost every instance, any problem has a solution.

Well I've had graphical issue already, or what was possibly a graphical issue it seems to have picked up the card fine but not noticed that it should be out putting via DVI instaed of VGA, so guess it assumes VGA as standard until its told different.

Sound card, just a matter of time, more concerned about the internet at the moment cause with the modem we have I don't know if the modem will recognise the pc as it has to be taught to allow the pc and also that I won't have AOL installed under linux nor do I know if I have the stuff to do that so don't know if AOL will recognise me as a client, of course I may not need any of that lol, like I say I'm a complete noob lol.

Well still running of the desktop cd right at this moment, and I did as you suggested and went to w wired connection to see if it got the net, and boom baby here I am.

I'm now off to actually install Kubuntu, I've spent most of the morning formatting and re-installing my windows so my HDD is nice and empty (it was starting to have problems anyway). So hopefully the installation procedure won't be too painful.

I still don't have any sound but I'm guessing that will be easier to fix once I am installed, also hoping I can get the wirless working as it's damned inconvenient having your pc sitting in the middle of the living room lol.

Re: Live CD not loading after boot screen.

            Right am now in Kubuntu running from HDD;

I did have to tinker though and remove quiet and splash from the boot menu, did read somewhere on how to do that in grub so am now going to go and figure that out.

All I have left to solve now is the sound problem and the wireless problem.

            More progress YAY.

Edit: Well thought I knew how to get into configure the boot menu but I seem to be wrong. In my windows XP linux dual boot instruction it says that by opening a terminal in kubuntu and typing "sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst" that it would bring up the grub boot menu and I could change what need to be changed there, but I keep getting the message "sudo: gedit: command not found"

Edit: Realised gedit was a program in gnome and thats why i didnt have it, so found gedit and downloaded it with adept package manager and although halfway through getting all the things it said something about packages breaking and it wasn't going to complete, but I still have gedit on my system now and I managed to change what I needed to change, Also that package break thing it said that when it was upgrading everything on the system when I had installed it but they're still done (well I think they are) so thats got me a little confused.

Edit: ALso I have the sound working now, but I still don't have wireless as of yet.

In Kubuntu, the command would be kdesu kate /boot/grub/menu.lst (kate is a GUI text editor). kdesu is used in a console shell to execute GUI applications. You actually didn't need to install gedit.
