Live CD not loading after boot screen.

    I have posted this in the gutsy gibbon section but further exploring of the site has led me here so I might get more help here, here the thread in the other section too;
    http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3088669.0

Hi, names McKenna, completely new to Linux started looking into a couple of days ago and got recommended kubuntu as a good version to start with for such a beginner as me.

Found and downloaded the desktop or live cd so I could just boot it and test it but I'm having problems with it already.

I get the kubuntu boot menu up, but then I select for it to start kubuntu and then nothing happens and my monitor even goes on standby. Tried to check the disk and the same happens, so any advice please.

Oh and if this is in the wrong area let me know.

    Cheers.

    McK

Edit: Should also say I have downloaded kubuntu 7.10
    And here's some of m system specs;

    AMD Athlon 64 FX-53 processor
    Ati Radeon X800 graphics card
    SATA hard drive
    Running WinXP

If more specifics are needed I can try and find them.

Do you have a ''start with driver update CD'' option ?

i'm unable to boot from the LiveCd normally. but selecting that option works for me.

I don't have a 'start with driver update cd' option unfortunately, I do have the option to 'install from driver updatecd' but I don't want to install it, I just want to trial it before i install it.

Any other ideas someone has also told me to burn the disc at a lower speed and that gives me the same problem, so I'm still stuck.

          Posted to your other location.

Have you tried to boot using the VGA option (I believe it's the second item on the boot menu)?

Not labelled as VGA but as safe mode and yeah tired that yesterday with and without the splash and quiet options stops at very same point as the normal mode.

Re: Live CD not loading after boot screen.

On my laptop with earlier versions of Kubuntu I had a similar problem. The LiveCD would not detect my monitor output correctly and switch to the VGA output instead of the LCD output.

With an X800 I assume you have 2 outputs is one VGA and one DVI or do you have a dual DVI card? Either way try hooking up your/another monitor to the second output and see if you get anything.

Re: Live CD not loading after boot screen.

my bad - 'install from driver updatecd' is the option i have to use.

it won't install automatically, install is a link on the desktop, you will still be able to try out kubuntu is if it were a normal boot of livecd.

it takes me a few presses of the enter key during the boot process, it is very slow to boot, i thought it had frozen the first time i tried. but it does boot every time eventually. (for me at least)

Wonder if I'm just not giving it enough time to boot at one point it had been sitting there for 5 mins, it wasn't frozen cuase i pressed enter to see what would happen and a command line appeared.

Yeah my monitor cable is via the DVI, I only have one monitor although I do have a cable somewhere for the VGA so if might dig that out tomorrow and see if i get anything via that, hadn't thought of that one, will inform you of any progress or lack thereof tomorrow lol.

Re: Live CD not loading after boot screen.

Give your computer some time to boot up (wait for the hdd light to quit blinking) then press ctrl+alt+f5 this should bring you to a command prompt. Then type "sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list" and enable the universe and multiverse repositories by getting rid of the # at the beggining of their lines. then run "sudo apt-get update" wait for that and then run "sudo apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx" this will download the propritary ATi driver.

Once thats done downloading run "sudo aticonfig --initial" After thats done hit ctrl-alt-f7 (should be a black screen) and then hit ctrl-alt-backspace (this resarts your X server) If that still doesn't work try hitting ctrl+alt+f5 and type "sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart"

I'm going to guess, that switching your cable to the VGA as apposed to the DVI may make a difference.

Got prgoress I switched the cables as suggested and ran it with splash and quiet off and it works, I just have no sound and I also have no net connection.

I have no idea how to get the net working, I have a Belkin USB wireless adapter going to my netgear router and I am online with AOL, did read somehwere about having to input ISP and DNS things and I'm sure with AOL they're all dynamic so I don't know how i would be able to input them if they keep changing, further help if it can be supplied would be appreciated.

                              Progress is good!

..Belkin USB wireless adapter going to my netgear router...
Can you connect directly to your netgear router; use a wired connection instead? I'd guess, again, that if you can, and reboot, that you will have 'Net access. Wireless issues continue to be the #2 problem with LiveCD/Installations of *ubuntu. If you can, and you end up with a 'Net connection, then you are more than half-way home, and you can then seek assistance in getting your wireless connection working.
