    Re: Help with grub.

You seem to be on top of this, Frank, so I'll drop this one, too, just in case:

If you see the boot menu,
quickly press the "c" key, that should give you a grub>
    Type (manually) these commands exactly:

    root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.20-15-generic root=UUID=19572df0-c05d-422f-bc3f-851e65c00ad7 ro quiet splash
    initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.20-15-generic
    boot

See if that boots you into Kubuntu

    Again, dibl's concern.
I'm wondering why you got all those different erros -- no file, no partition, cannot mount selected partition . . . along the lines of dibl's conclusion . . . don't know for sure (obviously)

      Re: Help with grub.

From earlier on in this thread:
      ## hiddenmenu
      # Hides the menu by default (press ESC to see the menu)
      hiddenmenu
His menu is hidden when booting.

        Re: Help with grub.

        Ha! Good one Snowhog!!!

Unhide it if it is commented, and let's see what happens:
EDIT: Ooops, I mean place a comment on it:
        # hiddenmenu

        (1) Select Kubuntu and tell us what it does (probably Error 15);

        (2) You can try to boot it manually as explained about by pressing "c" to get the grub>.

          Re: Help with grub.

You checked that the /boot/vmlinuz file is there; the initrd file should also be there.
Of course, if part of your root file system is not good or missing, who knows.

            Re: Help with grub.

yes, i can hit escape to bring up the boot menu (os/recovery/memtest)

but when i select any of them i get

            error 15
            file not found
            press any key to continue....

pressing any key brings the boot menu up again.

i set a boot flag with gparted cd. no help.

on reinstalling kubuntu, that's fine (i have nothing left to lose anyway > i'm about 2 gig through downloading the Gutsy DVD, so i'll wait on that to finish.

              Re: Help with grub.

Frank, why not try to boot into Kubuntu manually -- using the "c" key and those commands above? Just to rule this out. (If that woks, then re-type the menu.lst boot entry.)

On re-installing Kubuntu, as dibl says, use GParted to prepare the disk. perhaps the partitioner with the DVD is messing up? (Disk does not exit, file not found, can't mount partition errors)

                Re: Help with grub.

Update: Kubuntu 7.04. installed and working OK.

A friend of mine told me that his uni uses CentOS. so i installed that and it worked fine - after that i reinstalled Kubuntu, which booted on the first attempt.

Frank, Great! Thanks for the feedback. So, what, do you feel, is the conclusion, the Dx (diagnosis)?

                    Re: Help with grub.

On every 'failed' install, after setting up drives/partitions etc. the progress bar would hang at 5% during the 'formatting drive' process.

So, my guess would be, that for whatever reason Kubuntu was unable to format my drive(s) correctly. leaving most of the space on the drive in a raw/unformatted state, and so corrupting the installation. (even if the gparted livecd was used first)

if the formatting drive error was not the cause of my problem, I'm certain it's related at some level.

i have reinstalled several times since i was last in this post. after every install i would mount my drive, and every time the root partition only had 1.9 gig used.
