You seem to be on top of this, Frank, so I'll drop this one, too, just in case:
If you see the boot menu,
quickly press the "c" key, that should give you a grub>
Type (manually) these commands exactly:
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.20-15-generic root=UUID=19572df0-c05d-422f-bc3f-851e65c00ad7 ro quiet splash
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.20-15-generic
boot
See if that boots you into Kubuntu
Again, dibl's concern.
I'm wondering why you got all those different erros -- no file, no partition, cannot mount selected partition . . . along the lines of dibl's conclusion . . . don't know for sure (obviously)
