So drivers seems to be correct (libata, ata_piix), but doesnt work with my hard drive. (WD 80GB)

I have Gentoo Linux on this machine, working without any of the such problems.

Has anybody seen similar issue and is there any previous install version where could this work?

    Thanks

Did you get this output when running the Live CD?

This part seems like it could be a problem:

What does the same dmesg output look like after booting Gentoo?

yes this output is from running Kubuntu or Ubuntu Live CD (DVD)

In my gentoo it gives me -

I am not very happy form this, my MB contians IDE as well as SATA, gentoo uses modules libata for IDE and ata_piix for SATA?

The same think tries Kubuntu but cannot see IDE interface...

Is there a chance to try previous version and upgrade to current without expecting same issues?

      Thanks

Re: .cannot install (K)ubuntu 7.10 on IDE drive

You might try doing the partitioning and formatting before running the installer.
Use GParted to partition your IDE for whatever you will need (/swap, root ?, /home?), all ext3 (or whatever you want). Then run the live Cd installer. Use the manual partitioning method, watch for the Advanced button is Step 6 (at lower right), and specify where you want GRUB installed.
If in doubt, you can simply have GRUB installed to the same partition that you put Kubuntu root files in (and then later work out the booting).
        See if it goes then.

I don't think any recent prior version (7.04 or 6.10) would give a different result.

In my BIOS, there are several IDE "modes" to choose. "AHCP", "legacy", and I can't remember the third. Do you have choices? Maybe you could try a different mode setting. :P

I dont think partitioning will change the situation, because until system cannot see your drive as /dev/hda or /dev/sda doesn't matter how it's partitioned...

In my bios >this is bloody HP I have only PIO and UDMA, or LBA and bitshift options... I tried to change everything what could help but it didn't...

I'll try to use another HD and let know...

I found out that (K)ubuntu instalation doesn't see my HDD switched as Master, so I changed jumper to CS and it works!.. but..

..I loaded Live DVD instaled system and after reboot system freeze on starting Kubuntu screen and on keyboard blinks Caps and Num Locks...

              So I am investigating again...

Wow -- I didn't know the "cs" jumper could make such a difference -- good catch!

The keyboard thing could be a problem with the xorg.conf file. Then next time it freezes like that, try "Alt-F1" and/or "Ctrl-Alt-F1". If you get the console login prompt, log in and then run the xserver configuration script, which is
                Code:
                sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
and see if you can work your way through it. Probably the defaults for keyboard and mouse will work, unless you have some specific differences. When you finish the script, it dumps you back to a command line. At that point, enter
                Code:
                startx
                and see what happens.

I've just tried something else, configured grub for recovery mode, booted in that mode and got kernel panic...

Re: .cannot install (K)ubuntu 7.10 on IDE drive

It looks like the kernel line in your /boot/grub/menu.lst file isn't written correctly. Based on what you have in your fstab file, your kernel lines should look like this:
                    kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.20-16-generic root=UUID=88d08091-d9cd-45a8-830a-61ed100852ba
Your root directory, as reported by fstab, is located on /dev/sda4, and this is where grub is looking to boot from as evidenced in the error message (the UUID listed matches that on /dev/sda4 in fstab):
Begin: Mounting root file system... ...
                    /init: /init: 157: Syntax error: 0x88d08091-d9cd-45a8-830a-61ed100852ba
You say that you have sda1 as your boot partition. Is that actually correct? Did you establish a separation partion for /boot ?

Windows no longer obstructs my view.

No, I have just one boot partition, /dev/hda1 (in Gentoo)

I have the same configuration, but Ubuntu installed on my another computer in living room, and there wasn't any problem and grub.conf is configured the very same way...

You can read the UUIDs of your partitions with
                        Code:
                        blkid
I'm guessing that you changed something and a UUID changed, maybe. If you change the filesystem format, for example, the UUID changes. Run blkid, then check that against /etc/fstab and see if you can find the difference.

EDIT: I think the UUID in your root partition is bogus -- it is supposed to be a hexadecimal number and I see an "x" in there -- that would be illegal, i.e. a "syntax error".
