Impressed so far but...what is it?

Hi...I know that this must seem the Epitome of ignorance but hey...
Having just discoved Linux and UBUNTU, I am unclear as to which either UBUNTU/KUBUNTU I should be using.
The Main page of the UBUNTU Site, which is where I first arrived doesn't make it clear. I've installed and dabbled with both (single boot) and they seem like different flavours of the same thing.
If this is the case, what would be the criteria for choosing one system above the other.

It's a matter of taste -- how can someone else know your taste?

    But, Welcome, anyway!

I guess you haven't checked out Linux Mint yet huh?

They are the same. Ubuntu is set up to use the gnome desktop by default.
kubuntu is set up to use the kde desktop by default.
Either can become the other by going through the trouble of installing and changing the desktop manager.

You should choose based on the user interface that you prefer. Whichever desktop environment you found more congenial should be your choice.

Linux Mint is a build on top of Kubuntu.
It is not another choise, I think.
To have another choise, you must choose something that is not a build on top of of Linux Debian.
Try Mandriva if you want another choise. That is a build on top of Linux SUSE.

I don't think Mandriva is a fork of SuSE...unless I missed something somewhere.

You say you have the option to choose both. I have too :-)
I try both. There is no other way :-)?
It is the sudden freedom you get in Linux when you leve the Kings Reign :-)
I myself have desided: KDE. I look very much forward to KDE 4.0 is released.
I think that will be something like a revolution for Linux!

You can experiment with both, all three, or more, very easily by dual booting, which is easy to do in Linux. In doing so, just maintain good, frequent backups (on CD, DVD, and/or flash drive/external USB HDD) of your important personal data (documents, photos, music)--which is usually stored in a /home folder in K/Ubuntu. Then, when new versions come out or you zero-in on preferences, you can re-partition your drive clean, format, and install just the one or two you like best.

Plenty of help around if you go that route.
