    Adept Installer

Hey guys...i'm glad i've decided to start exploring Kubuntu...BUT what headakes LOLLL.
I'm stucked with the Adept installer and i need some help: it seems that the only software i have available is the one from the installation cd. Not even firefox is available for installation! (not highlighted). I've then clicked on the Software Sources, Third Party Software and marked the HTTP://..... as available source...but still i'm only getting the option to delete the software installed from the cd ......and not finding any new one. WHAT am i doing wrong?

    cheers for any help

Yeah, I'm not crazy about that default setting to use the installation CD either.

OK, I think you are doing KMenu>Add/Remove Programs. Don't do that any more!

KMenu>System>Adept Package Manager is your basic GUI front-end to the Debian Package (dpkg) system. So, if you open Adept, which requires your password, then click "Adept" and "Manage Repositories", on the first tab you need to "X" the first four items (mine were X'd by default). The Server tab on the drop-down list should name a place that makes some sense for you -- mine says "Server for United States", which is where I live so that's right.

Then go to the second tab, entitled "Third-Party Software" and un-X the line that says "cdrom:[Kubuntu 7.10 ........,]" That's the one that makes you insert the stupid CD, even when what you want isn't on it. :P

That's it -- click "Reset" and you should be good to go.

Scroll down the list, find Firefox, "mark" it for installation, then click "Apply Changes" on the top menu, and it will be done.

By the way, some Kubuntu users prefer Synaptic as the package manager front-end. It's fine too, but you have to install it, and if you don't have the repositories marked, it won't work any better than Adept. :P

Open Konqueror and paste /usr/share/doc/Debian/apt-howto/apt-howto.en.html into the URL. This will open the main index page to the manual.

I guess I'll have to get somebody to show me Vista, because people keep asking about the "crystal" window frames and I don't know what they mean :P

The 3D thing is compiz. What is your graphics chip? With a suitable driver that supports 3D, you can install a group of the compiz packages and get the so-called "Advanced Desktop Effects" (rotating cube, wobbly windows, etc.). Here's a link to some of the "how-tos" of it:

This probably wont be 100% accurate - I'm still new to Kubuntu and im running on Vista right now and not Linux - but I'll try my best.

I personally love the look of Vista and I think I've done a pretty good job making my Kubuntu look like Vista. I think the Aero (if by 'crystal' you meant Aero) theme its the best looking desktop there is.
              Here's what I do:
1). Open up Control Center and go to Appearances.
2). Go to Colors and pick a color theme that looks similar to what you want and customize it.
3). Go to Window Styles, the first tab should have the option to choose the theme, I like the Plastik theme (which this 'guide' needs as Plastik has some options that others do not)
4). I think that the same tab has the options to round the bottom corners and set the window frame thickness, I like 6 though any of them between 4 and 8 don't look too bad.
If the options above aren't on the same group, find the group with the option to round the boarder and increase its width, the rest of the guide is on that group.
5). Next tab should have your Button style, choose Vista ;-D
6). The tab after that (or skip one, I cant recall) should have the outer border colors, I like 0/0/0 for the inner boarder and if I use a black background (like the Windows Ultimate Wallpaper - Strands - 30" which is 2560x1600 natively cropped down -not resized- to 2000x1600 cutting off the left side and keeping the right section. You can find all the wallpapers here.) I like 150/150/150 on the outer border to give definition to the Windows but still let them blend, there is a second tab on this window for the Inactive, I like to use the same colors
7). Next tab (I'm very good at remembering names lol) should be the last one on the right and it's the Active/Inactive titlebar Style... I like the option that is default for the Active titlebar, but for the Inactive, it seems that the default (a gradient) is more blue than the black that I use so I change it to the bubble/bullet option that is directly above the drop down image selection window.

[Edit]: for the Taskbar, took a screenshot of Vista and clipped a blank section of the taskbar and saved it as a PNG file, if you want it I have uploaded it here.

Here's a screenshot of what it should look like: http://twiztidsinz.com/pics/lollinux.jpg

                Re: Adept Installer

Emerald offers some interesting window decoration themes, which can be enabled in conjunction with compiz.

The 'crystal' look in Vista is very much like the boarder look I get with Beryl running the Emerald theme. I'm pretty sure that it is the same/similar in Compiz.
