Re: default browser and email
I'm still trying to figure out the interactions between the desktop managers and the alternatives system so I can't give a good answer to that.
What exactly are you trying to do with your email setup that isn't functioning as you would like?

Re: default browser and email
Since you have made firefox your browser I would think you would want to configure it as your default email client in firefox configuration, not in kde (I don't think ff pays attention to kde settings).
Looking at mozilla knowledgebase
Try
about:config
in ff address bar.
Right click within the window and select new- string
For preference name:
network.protocol-handler.app.mailto
click ok and then enter the full path to your email client in the popup dialogue. Thunderbird is probably in /usr/bin.

Re: default browser and email
Heres what i do to set my browser as opera, afterwards apps like konversation use opera as the browser:
kcontrol > kde components > component chooser
Then pick Web Borwser and set to Firefox with whatever arguments are needed, i use opera -newpage to get opera to open the link in a new tab
You can also edit the email client there, thats about it really, stuff like pidgin have an option to set a custom browser
Anyone know where gnome apps look for their browser?
