What security measures are recomended for linux on the net?

Also I have a Canon Pixma ip5000 printer that needs a driver.
Can anybody help with this?

The answer to that depends on your purpose and criticality of your data. If you're just a private home user with a broadband connection, and you're behind a router (which has had the factory default IP address changed), you're pretty well isolated, and 99% of the malware is designed for Windows/IE anyway, so it won't do anything to a Linux system. If you're nervous about it, there's klamav for virus-protection and guarddog for firewalling.

Also I have a Canon Pixmai p5000 printer that needs a driver.
Can anybody help with this?

You hit my category on the spot, so I will take your advise and leave things alone.

As for the printerdriver, I have downloaded the gutenprint file, then what?
Beeng used to windows printer setup and totally unfamiliar with kubuntu, this looks complicated or am I wrong.
Can get the printer to work as generic, so something has to be done.

Yep, I've been running Kubuntu for over a year now on a Linksys router with zero antivirus or firewalling, and zero problems. Just make sure and change that factory default IP address.

On your printer, I wish it were easy. You noticed that it says "not verified", right?

Here is the generic installation instruction. It's not the easiest Kubuki dance in the world, and because it's "not verified", there's no assurance of success when you finish it. When your printer model gets added to the foomatic database (in the relatively near future, one hopes), then your situation will improve 100%.

Have you already tried to install the printer through
kmenu-system settings-printers-add-printer/class and it failed?

There are several drivers for Canon printers, but none of them work for the Pixma 5000.
Tried the generic driver, but no dice.

EDIT: I bought a Canon printer earlier this year, before I checked for opensource drivers :P , and ended up buying a turboprint driver. It was't a lot of money -- $30, maybe, and it works fine.
