    kubuntu closing when unattended

    Several times in the kast few days I have left kubuntu 7.04 for a number of hours only to return to a black screen. Any way of telling what is happening and how to prevent it?

        I believe you will locate this under System Settings.

          I have disabled power saving and will see how that works. Thanks.

            If that was indeed the source of the problem, and you don't have it anymore, please post back so others may benefit.

              Its been OK for 24 hours now--so far so good. Downside is no power saving. A google search revealed numerous probleems with power management on linux. Hope they get it fixed at least on Kubuntu.

                Unless you are running a laptop on batteries (not using AC), then not having power management isn't important. In my case, having it enabled creates problems with my sound - I don't have any. As I use my laptop almost exclusively here at home, and it's connected to AC all the time, I don't care. I want sound more than I need power management capability.

                  Dont know if this applys to you, but if your using an ATI card with the propriety drivers there are some known issues. And setting the following may resolve the issues (if they apply to you).

                  For ATI X700 and ATI X1100:
                  File: /etc/default/acpi-support

                  SAVE_VBE_STATE=false
                  POST_VIDEO=true
                  USE_DPMS=false

                  For ATI X1300 and the ATI X1400:
                  File: /etc/default/acpi-support

                  POST_VIDEO=false
