    can't play DVD

When I try to play a DVD with Kaffeine I get the following error:

The source seems encrypted and can't be read.
Your DVD is probably crypted. According to your country laws, you can or can't use libdvdcss to be able to read this disc. (media stream scrambled/encrypted)

This is a commercial dvd? Have you installed libdvdcss?

Read this section on the reasons ubuntu doesn't have support for certain restricted formats

    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

and this for information on what is needed to be able to run commercial dvds.

After you are a bit familiar with these links post back with any questions you have and we will go from there.

Yes the problem is with commercial DVD's and no I have not installed libdvdcss. I followed the second link and did what it suggested and now I have the sign down by the clock on the lower toolbar saying there are 6 updates available. I click on that and let it do it's thing until it's finished but that sign never goes away. When I click on it again it list the same 6 items but shows them as installed. I hit Apply Updates it goes to Update Complete and then I hit Quit. After doing this several times the updates available sign is still there. Now after doing this libdvdcss2 is listed in Adept which is what I wanted but when I try to install it I get the following error:

There was an error commiting changes. Possibly there was a problem downloading some packages or the commit would break packages.

What version of Kubuntu are you running? My HOWTO was written specifically for Feisty, as my PLEASE NOTE points out. Later in the post, modified instructions for Gutsy were provided by another member.

It sounds as if you previously opened the updates button on your task bar and let the system update software.

In adept go to the menu adept -> manage repositories
In the third party tab delete the medibuntu repositories you may have added there.
Then add the following line(copy and paste the entire line below when you click the add button on the third party tab.

              Code:
              deb [url]http://packages.medibuntu.org/[/url] feisty free non-free
It will ask you if it should fetch an updated list.
Let it or else click the fetch updates button when you return to the main adept screen.

When you search on libdvdcss2 click the libdvdcss2 result to open more information about it. Then click the details button.
Then you should see a package relationships tab and there should be only one required listed there - libc6. Click on libc6 and see if it says installed. If you see something here or in the libdvdcss2 listing that indicates that packages or broken or has red markings post back here with information about what it says and what the version numbers of the packages are. NOTE: the conflict lines are not a problem unless there are indications that the conflicting packages are actually installed. If something is indicating a problem post back. Don't just start removing things.
If it says simply installed and everything looks ok then request installation of libdvdcss2. Click preview changes and make sure that there isn't a bunch of other stuff in the listing. If there is then it sounds like an earlier package upgrade may have had problems. You can click those packages and try to cancel changes for each of them and see if you can keep libdvdcss2 in the listing. As I said the only required is libc6 so, unless there was a problem with that library you shouldn't need a bunch of other packages to get it to work. If you are confused about anything don't hesitate to post back before committing any changes.

                Re: can't play DVD SOLVED

I deleted the medibuntu repositories and added the code like you said. After doing that libdvdcss2 installed just fine and the updates installed and the update icon is now gone. And it now plays commercial DVD's quite nicely. Thanks opie and the rest of you that was very helpful.
