not able to login to 7.04

here is something new to me. i have had this installed and using it for a little while now.

i restarted my 7.04 and it locked me out of the system. when i enter my password i get a black screen and then it returns to the login screen. it is the correct login and password as i have tried entering a bad password and it says login failed.

any suggestions before i wipe it out and start over? Thanks

I think it's just a broken X server -- you shouldn't have to reinstall the whole OS.

Can you boot "Recovery Mode", and restore the last good /etc/X11/xorg.conf file?

Or, if that's a problem, boot Recovery Mode and run

    Code:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Choose your video card if you know it. If it doesn't work the first time through, run it again but on the second pass, say "NO" to autodetecting the video card, and choose "VESA" as the display type, and you'll get a GUI, although it won't necessarily be the best that your graphics chip is capable of.

Then, when you've got a GUI to work in, you can proceed to install your proprietary video driver, or to configure the open source one -- whatever.

ok i tried what you said and i could not get out of the Konsole when i finished.

      i manually restarted the system.
      i logged in

      and i got this message

there was an error setting up inter-process communications for KDE. the message returned by the system was:

      could not open network socket

please check that the "dcopserver" program is running

then i have an ok button below that.

did i mess something else up or is this part of the process in fixing this issue?

Do you mean you ran the dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg script, all the way to the end? Did it not dump back to the prompt? What happened when you entered "startx" -- Ooops, did I forget to tell you to "startx" at the end of that script, when you're back at the prompt? OK, we've found your problem ... it's ME!

        i manually restarted the system.
OK, I'm not entirely sure what this means, but for future reference (and in case you used a different method), when you are in a console (text mode) and you wish to restart your system, please use

        Code:
        sudo shutdown now -r
to get it done without further damage.

Which, if I remember correctly, continues that infinite loop of non-functional login screens, right?

Well, ahem, no you didn't make it make it any worse, and apparently it is NOT in the process of actually fixing it.

Drat, I remember having that problem long ago (OK, last month) and I'm 100% confident that re-installing the OS is not required, but I'm struggling to remember how I beat it into submission. It is indeed the X server that is mis-behaving.

lol yes you left that part out about "startx" it happens.

i mean i manually restarted the system by holding in the start button shut it down and restarted the system. ok i'll remember that code next time, i hope.

well let me see if i can go back and redo everything and finish it with startx

i'll let you know what happens.

no actually it brought me to a blank wallpaper screen with nothing not even the cursor.

i went back and did what you suggested and it gave me answer.

xserver-xorg postinst warning: overwriting possiblity-customised configuation
            file; backup in / etc/x11/xorg.conf.20071023181006

couldn't get a file descriptor refering to the console

thats where i am at now still in the Konsole

              Wow.

Well, you're seeing messages I never saw before! :P

So, it seems we have moved from X server configuration problems to, errr X server configuration problems with permissions problems too!

Geez, I dunno. Are you still in Recovery Mode (i.e. "root")? If not, here's my last shot:

              Code:
              sudo su
Now you are the Super User, with full powers of destruction.

              Now run that
              Code:
              dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
script again -- you don't need "sudo" since you ARE the SU.

Then, when it is done, try
              Code:
              startx
again. I'll cross my fingers. If it fails to start the X server, I think something has gone South in your system, although I don't know why and it's a disappointment that it's not more rugged than that. The Linux OS seems to be running fine, but clearly the X server has major problems, and I'm not smart enough to know how to re-install everything that is related to KDM and KDE. I guess you could try installing the kubuntu-desktop meta-package. :P

Can we be sure that it isn't actually something messed up with the password, especially given the subsequent problems?

ok i went in and did that as super user.

and finished then i shut it down and started it up in normal mode.

i logged in and i have an open Konsole on the screen and nothing else.

Opie i can log into linux now in normal mode as in my last post.

i can log in normally now but when i do it opens to just a Konsole open waiting for me no task bar or anything else.

could it still be an option that it could be something messed up with the password or are our post criss crossing each other?

the best way for us to help each other is once we post a problem is to work with that problem on that post by crossing your problem into someone elses problem will only lead to people getting confused on who is trying to help who.
i am sure once people that understand your problem read it they will get back to you with some help. hope this helps

i apologize i thought you posted your posted your problem on here and then posted a cross reference in this thread.

you might get a better response with your own post so you can attract people with knowledge with your problem vs hoping to snag some help on this one. just thoughts but you might get lucky on this one as well.

good luck with getting your problem taken care of.

@ponygirl, I'd say something about KDE is very messed up -- I've never seen the condition that you are describing. It almost sounds like part or all of KDE got deleted, somehow.

Since all you have is a console window, you might try
                            Code:
                            sudo apt-get intall kdm
as the linked post says that fixed his/her system. That is the "K" Desktop Manager -- the thing that runs your X server.

If that doesn't work, go ahead and try
                            Code:
                            sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
just to see what happens. It is a meta-package that includes KDE and the Kubuntu suite of KDE packages. :P

lol you won't believe this but i am back to square one from where we started.

if you have any suggestions let me know.

i am going to start over with your suggestions and see if it works in the mean time. if it doesn't i have nothing on this system that i am worried about losing si starting over is looking pretty easy at this point. was just hoping to solve it for any future problems when there was things on there i would not want to lose
