Please recommend an image viewer comparable to Irfanview

Any (ex)Irfanview fans out there? I have been using Irfanview for Windoze for years and I'm not impressed with Kubuntu's default application: Qwenview. Does anyone have a suggestion for a better choice for someone used to Irfanview?

Or maybe I can get Qwenview to do what I want. The 2 things I miss are simple cropping tools and 'stretch to fit' in full-screen mode. I could get used to scrolling through images in a directory with the wheel instead of left-click and right-click if I have to.

If you select "adjust to window" in the "windowed" mode, when you change to full screen it will adjust the size of the image to the screen. I'm not sure if this what you where looking for, but...

Why don't you continue to use Irfanview? It runs OK in WINE.

BTW, I use a lot Digikam. In it's edit mode it has a lot of tools. It's clearly geared towards photo treatment, but for sure can crop images. Install the digikamimageplugins for extra tools.

Far from full-blown image edit programs like Gimp, but quite nice and easy to use.

I, too, would like to know if there's any "native irfanview" for linux. It looks like KView is aiming for this goal, but as of now, lacks too many features to be even usable (the only manipulation features are rotate and flip... ).

@running IrfanView in Wine (Snowhog sent me a link to this howto)- sure, it runs fine, but load times are terribly long compared to windows... also, integration with file associations isn't a simple thing to do (maybe wine alredy translates linux paths for windows apps?). Here is some other howto, I may try that myself . Looks like you need to get your hands dirty with some scripting. Still, pretty straght-forward, just hope it works...

There was a selection for "fit to window" which I thought was what I wanted but it didn't do what I hoped. I Selected "fit to height" and now it stretches to full height in full screen mode, which is good enough.

By accident I moused over to the top left corner while in full screen mode. A little navigation panel popped down. That is better than Irfanview.

When you say 'cpmparable to', it does depend on what features you mostly want.
In Windows, I was a big fan of Irfanview, Slowview and XnView. All for different reasons/features.

Lucky for me, we can get XnView for linux.

I use it a lot. Small, fast, friendly, lots of features, free.

May as well make this more informative:

I just checked up on some of the features of XnView.

It has the quick cropping you wanted.

Also a handful of the most often used image filters and effects.

It has a lot of options for fitting images to windows: fit to width, fit to height, fit window to image, don't fit anything.

Also, for the fit to width, fit to height options you can choose whether that applies to all images or only large ones.

Scrolling through a directory is done by mouse click on buttons, or using PageUp and PageDown keys.

                  It even opens pdfs.

It has full screen mode, editable slideshows, capture function, sequence/batch conversion and rename.

When I use Sylpheed for emails, and Sylpheed doesn't display images or other attachments, I used XnView as the default imager opener. Very quick.

Features that I've used a lot in irfanview are the batch resizing and renaming. I know there are batch commands in some of the other tools but are they as easy to use with good results.

Also the feature to make web pages from a directory of selected images using the thumbnail browser. I have found some web page creators in linux but not one yet that is both as easy to use and produces a simple but functional result.

You might be interested in installing kipi-plugins (or perhaps they are installed by default, just haven't checked). This package will give Gwenview (and Digikam and Krita) more tools than what a regular image viewer has.

Thank you, Spindles, for your comprehensive post about XnView. I took a quick look and everything seems to 'fall in place' for a die-hard IrfanView user. I instantly noticed that it is also quicker than Qwenview and, needless to say, runs rings around IrfanView-on-Wine.

XnView and IrFanView seem to be very similar. One (well, me) wonders if XnView based it's development after IrFanView. Both authors are from Europe.
