Wine is not the best methhod.
    try this:
    http://www.howtoforge.com/vmware_con..._windows_linux

then download and install the latest vmplayer from here:
    http://www.vmware.com/download/player/

now you can run your "new" windows as a guest "inside" your linux.

    Or you could try this:

This may be of help as well:

I hope this helps you a bit.

However, VMWare does not (generally) have graphics hardware acceleration support, and so it won't help you with Warcraft III.

Assuming you have the correct drivers installed for your graphics card, check out the Wine AppDB at http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManage...cation&iId=897 for whatever version you're playing, there might be some tips there.

You should try the latest version of Wine. A lot of 3D work has been done so speed will probably be better.
Running the game in OpenGL mode is a world of difference, check here for the info:

As James points out much of wine use is for games and vmware isn't going to be a solution for this.
As far as generic tweaks I don't know of any. Each game can have its own issues. Many games I have run are just as fast as under windows, as long as your machine isn't too outdated.
