install problems of Kubuntu - Grub error

Hi, I fitted a new HDD and thought I would install Gutsy dual boot with XP.
I have had days of problems trying to install an ide 400Gig Hdd, so ended up having a 40 gig master HDD and a 400 Gig Slave!.

On the 40 gig HDD I have Xp installed.
Then using the Gutsy live CD ( also tried Fiesty, wth same result) I went through the install process, when it got to partitioning the HDD,

I had options of using the entire XP hard drive.

or. using 1/2 the 40 gig drive, or continuous free space or to manually install the partition.

or/ i In the manual setup to use the 400 gb free space , I chose to make a partition at the end of 136GB using ext3 and mounting it as root /. This showed up on the partition table
Then I chose to make a swap of 2 Gb and to make that at the end of the free space ( this is before the root partition created)
I then waited and it installed grub on somehing like hdb0 ( sorry it was to fast to note).
Then after the install finished I rebooted and got a Grub error 17.
    Any suggestions please

Re: install problems of Kubuntu - Grub error

Error 17 -- sounds like GRUB is trying to mount a Windows partition or something like that.
    Should be fixable.
Try to sort this out using the following guide:

How To GRUB Methods - Toolkit

    Tips:

-- You *DO* want to install grub in the Master Boot Record of the Windows drive, and it should be called (hd0). Your Kubuntu drive should be hd1.
-- The key here is to know what's on each drive and what each drive is called by BIOS and GRUB (GRUB is the bootloader). And the key to this is the geometry command. It's mentioned at the end of the How-to: Get a grub prompt by typing at Konsole sudo grub, then type geometry (hd0), geometry (hd1), etc.

Edit: You will have to use your Kubuntu Live CD to do any work on this -- fire it up, then open a terminal called Konsole (K-Menu > System > Konsole).
