kubicle linked to a forum thread that helped me to solve my problem. in fact, I ended up with a solution that gave me better than vga=791 (1024x768@16k).

Err...let's not get carried away here

I'm glad you got it solved, the solution seems to depend on the graphics card used (at least judging by the feedback on the bug page), which seems to make it harder to troubleshoot and fix...nasty bug nevertheless, especially since some people might not notice it before they need their consoles (X doesn't start for some reason, for example) :P
